Milwaukee's moveon pac mtg notes - "Leave No Voter Behind.."
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 11:40 PM by rodmant
Went to the Milwaukee MoveOn PAC mtg tonight and took these notes
from Mark Edsell's talk:

goal: increase Kerry votes by ~440,000 nationwide, by targeting
undecideds; and people that vote, but regularly miss
some elections (moveon buys lists that try to identify these
groups)

scope: hit ~10,000 wards nationwide in grassroots
"Leave No voter Behind program"

staff:

500 (paid?) experienced grassroots organizers, 50-60 will be arriving
in Wisconsin after Sept 20 for duration of campaign

current Wisconsin moveon pac leadership:

Mark Edsell
[email protected]

Mark is on unpaid leave from his current job - he's
worked for 4 years as a professional organizer,
lobbyist, and political campaign director.

Terry Ole (spelling?)
Degree in political science. Attorney that was based in San
Francisco, (w/Wisconsin roots) now moved to WI for a 2.5 month leave
of absence. Planning to put in "70 hour" weeks until Nov 2.

volunteers:

ward captains needed. Sounds like a typical captain should
recruit 6 additional volunteers to work their ward.

BIG PLUS - ward captain's will *know* their data has gotten to moveon

ward captains manage their own data - ie you enter canvassing and
phone banking results in to the moveon database yourself via a web
interface. I believe/hope that ward captains subsequently may edit,
correct, and query this database.

commitment: 5 hrs/wk for 6 weeks. 15 hours/election week,
must take Nov 2 off to work on election day

how:

canvassing - talk to people in your neighborhood about the
election, and get out the vote.

phone banking

unlike Kerry and Bush organizers,
they will not push absentee ballots on WI voters (I agree)

Keep it legal - no coordination/communication between
the moveon pac and the Kerry or Democratic party campaign!
Leave your Kerry button off during canvassing; don't drop off
moveon flyers when your working on Kerry campaign (it is legal
to work on both but, only as a volunteer and you must be
careful not to coordinate).

needs:

volunteers

places for out of state organizers to stay

They just need some space for a sleeping bag. The should be
up early and will be working late night after night.
