Michael Moore coming to FSU Oct. 27

FAIRMONT — Oscar- and Emmy- winning director of groundbreaking films such as “ Roger and Me,” “ Bowling for Columbine” and “ Fahrenheit 9/ 11,” Michael Moore is bringing his “ Slacker Uprising Tour” to Fairmont State.

As part of the Fairmont State Celebration of Culture and Ideas Lecture series, Moore will speak at 8 p. m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Feaster Center.

About 4,000 tickets will be available for the event. FS students, faculty and staff will receive one ticket for free with a valid FS ID. Students, faculty and staff should pick up their tickets in the Wallman Hall Box Office before Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Tickets for the general public go on sale at 8 a. m. Wednesday, Oct. 13. General admission tickets are $ 5, and there is a purchasing limit of five tickets per person. Tickets can be picked up at the box office on campus or at Mountain People’s Market in Morgantown, or tickets can be mailed to customers.

To order tickets, call the box office at 367- 4240. There will be no admittance to the event without a ticket.

Calling it his “ Slacker Uprising Tour” in an effort to get millions of traditional nonvoters to the polls Nov. 2, Moore visits Fairmont State as part of 60- city tour to the 20 battleground states. His tour began Sept. 26 in Elk Rapids, Mich., and will end on election day in Tallahassee, Fla.

Moore’s show will consist of his monologue, interaction with the audience and a few surprise guests. He will read letters he’s received from soldiers in Iraq, which are published in his new book “ Will They Ever Trust Us Again?” He will offer prizes for people who register to vote and will conduct the “ world’s largest karaoke sing- a- long” to John Ashcroft’s “ Let the Eagle Soar.”

At many venues, Moore will show clips from his “ Fahrenheit 9/ 11” DVD and give everyone present a chance to win their own “ pet goat.”

Moore’s goal is to see that more than 56 percent of the public votes in the November election — something that has not happened since 1968, according to www.michaelmoore.com “ Fahrenheit 9/ 11” won the top prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and has gone to become the highest- grossing documentary of all time.

Moore was born in Flint, Mich., and attended Catholic schools, including a year in seminary. He was an Eagle Scout, Newspaper Boy of the Week and the youngest person ever elected to public office in the state of Michigan when he was 18.

Fairmont State’s Celebration of Culture and Ideas Lecture series brings nationally prominent speakers of diverse viewpoints to the campus each fall and spring. This year’s lineup also brings the Rev. Al Sharpton ( Oct. 21), Tucker Carlson ( Oct. 21), Ernest Green ( Feb. 2), Cornel West ( March 31) and Jen Chapin ( date not yet set).
