2. Report on 8/6 Coupeville forum
Edited on Sat Aug-08-09 02:53 AM by eridani
Town Hall:
Thursday, August 6th
6:00pm – 8:00pm
Whidbey Island League of Women Voters Forum
Coupeville Recreation Center
901 NW Alexander Street
Coupeville, WA

The League of Women Voters featured a panel of speakers including Marshall Goldberg (local retired doctor and leader of Island County Single Payer efforts), and Barbara Bailey (State Rep, LD 10) among other speakers. The panel represented both sides of the issue fairly evenly.

One notable moment of the event was that Barbara Bailey, (State Rep, LD 10) spoke out strongly against health care reform, Representative Larsen was very clear in explaining why he doesn’t support the current form of the public option (in his view, tying the fee schedule for payments to providers to the Medicare schedule would simply extend the problems with Medicare to the larger population), and it sounds like he’s focused on trying to change the public option to fix that problem rather than eliminate the public option.

The crowd was about 50-50 for and against the current health care reform bill. It was fairly civilized—occasional heckling of the speakers, but the moderator was very clear about expecting respectful behavior and about stepping in when people started to be loud or rude. She also insisted that signs come down when the program started so that sightlines weren’t blocked. The turnout exceeded the venue, so they put a speaker outside to the standing crowd in the parking lot. One reporter was from the Whidbey News-Times. Another person from the media attended with a video camera but we were unable to determine what outlet they were from.

3. Next Thursday--meeting in Longview targeted by teabaggers
We just learned that fringe right-wing opponents of reform are likely targeting an event next Thursday in Longview which will be attended by Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell & Rep. Baird. Though this is not a health care event, it is important that we turnout pro-reform people in order to not let opponents hijack the event as a platform to broadcast anti-health care messages.

We are working to identify one HCAN organization who can take the lead on this event on the ground (coordinating turnout, prepping participants, signs), but we can all generate turnout. We will let you know who the lead is soon.

Best,
Joshua

4. Report from Everett
Rep. Rick Larsen Town Hall on Healthcare, Mt Vernon, Saturday, August 8th

Arrived with my carpool at 1:45 pm, 15 minutes before start time, to find the line to enter the building snaking all the way around the perimeter of the parking lot and heading for the street. For those who are familiar with the Skagit PUD facility, and the size of the conference room, it was clear people getting in the line then would not get into the building. KING5 news said the capacity was 250, and the crowd outside was 4-5 times that. I guessed about 1,000 people, so that actually matches KING5's numbers.

So rather than get in line we wandered around near the head of the line, and found some friends who invited us into the line with them. I swear this was not my intent when I decided not to bother to stand at the back of the line. So we got in to the room. The back wall of the conference room is floor to ceiling glass, and the overflow stood outside and could see in. Larsen took questions inside and then went outside to take more questions, in and out twice. The PA had speakers outside so everyone could hear.

The crowd was probably about evenly divided between pro and con reform. Everyone who got inside was asked to sign in. Larsen set the ground rules, saying we were going to do this the "Pacific Northwest way", that is, nicely. He suggested that if we allowed spontaneous applause, it should be OK to allow booing, so he asked that we refrain from both. There were a handful of people in the crowd who couldn't restrain themselves from occasional outbursts, and these people either settled down or left early. But for the most part, for those who actually wanted to learn something as well as hear what others had to say, it was pretty good hour and a half. (I left at 3:20, so I don't know how much longer it continued, but it was officially scheduled to end at 3.)

Larsen spoke specifically about provisions in the current version of H.R. 3200. Right off the bat someone claimed the bill would provide health care coverage for illegal aliens, which Larsen forcefully refuted, citing the section and page in the bill. Other myths that you've probably heard were also brought up, discussed and refuted. When Larsen refuted these strongly held beliefs about the bill there was someone yelling "Tell the Truth" and other background rumblings from the crowd.

I was struck by the silence of the crowd, however, in response to one question. After a number of questions and some comments on the inability of the federal government to run programs without fraud, waste or bureaucratic red-tape, Whatcom Democrat Abe Jacobson asked, so we've heard a lot about government waste. My health insurance company paid $1.1 billion, that's billion with a "b", to its CEO when he resigned. Would you address the issue of waste and fraud in the health insurance industry? Abe's question stop the opposition cold. They see themselves as champions of the little guy, and have erroneously targeted the government as the sole enemy. In order to oppose what they see as a government takeover of health care, they are forced to defend the private health insurance industry. But they are also angry about bailing out wall street, and recognize getting screwed when it's pointed out. So we should be pointing it out. The opposition is unlikely to be convinced that any reform legislation is a good idea. But at least we can deflate them by reminding them of the failures of the private health insurance industry. Neutralize their opposition by confusing them about who really is the bad guy in this drama. Addressing health insurance company profits and bankruptcies due to medical bills would also work. Bankruptcies were not mentioned at all while I was there.

Not surprising, but unfortunate, the TV news coverage failed to include anything substantive about health care reform. All they reported was the crowd, the controversy, and related it to the national trend of town hall meetings. I think it would be good to lobby them to actually cover the substance of the Town Hall. At least KING5 was there the entire time with their camera. Even just putting on-line the raw footage they have of the questions and answers would be good.

Larsen said they will set up some more town halls on health care for the last week of August. Good luck in Everett next week.

chair whatcom dems

P.S. I shared with Larsen's staff the post on this list of the Indiana Democratic group and how they handled a town hall effectively. They acknowledged it and said thanks. I don't know what all they may have taken from the advice, but Larsen gets praise from me for running an effective, respectful, and informative Town Hall.

7. Location chance secret until last minute
As we mentioned in the coalition meeting this morning, Rep. Larsen is changing the location of his town hall in Everett tomorrow night at 5pm.

His office is saying they won't be able to confirm the new location until later tonight or even tomorrow morning.

This is unfortunate, but out of our control. Please be ready to notify the people you are turning out at very short notice - check your email in the morning.

Dustin Lambro of Organizing for America will be at the Everett Station by 3pm to redirect folks who show up there. Also, we indeed are telling people to show up at 3 or 3:45 - the earlier the better the chances of getting into the venue.

Great work being flexible!

27. Report on Poulsbo
http://horsesass.org/?p=19766

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA-01) held a town-hall meeting in the North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo earlier today. Kos diarist Pen gives a brief write-up:

The usual suspects were there with their “keep the feds out of my healthcare” signs and their baby killer signs. They were perhaps 25% of a large crowd that filled North Kitsaps auditorium full.

I was immediately handed a flier about ‘Death Panels”. I took it, perused it, then said to the woman handing them out: “So you really believe there are death panels?”

“Not yet,” she told me, “But there will be.”

“Oh, there ARE death panels right now, “I assured her, ” and since Obamas been president, the health insurance industry has presided over the deaths of 18,000 Americans.”

I handed her flier back and didn’t stick around to listen to her blathering as I walked away. I had seen the fear in her eyes when I brought up the REAL death panels going on today. It’s the talking point that literally destroys the right wings platform.

10. Baird changes his mind and will be holding 5 town meetings
http://www.baird.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=977&Itemid=99

Washington, D.C.- Today, Congressman Brian Baird (D-WA-03) announced a series of five town hall meetings to reach out to constituents and discuss issues facing the nation.

"I have always been a huge advocate of town halls" said Congressman Baird, who has hosted more than three hundred town halls since taking office. "Frankly, I have had concerns about how we can have constructive dialogue and, unfortunately, in response to some of the things we've been seeing across the nation I have said some things myself that I regret. I want to express that regret directly and announce that we will be holding a series of five town halls so people can express their opinions and ask questions. My hope and trust is that we can have the kinds of informative exchanges that I have valued for so long and that reveal the very best of public discourse."

These town halls are in addition to the Congressman's pre-planned August schedule, which includes several telephone town halls that will reach thousands of people who would otherwise not be able to come to a town hall meeting. Congressman Baird will also hold a series of private, focused meetings with doctors, nurses, small business owners, and health care clinic administrators to go into more detail about specifics of the proposed legislation and how it would affect health care in our communities.

Please click here for a complete statement from Congressman Baird on health care town hall meetings and his recent remarks on the issue.

Below is the information for the upcoming town hall in Clark County. Locations are being sought for the four additional town halls that will be held throughout Southwest Washington in the next few weeks and these will be announced when possible:

19. Venue change
Congressman Adam Smith’s Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, August 25th has been changed from the 250-seat Lakewood City Council Chambers to the 4,000-seat Harry Lang Stadium at Clover Park High School in Lakewood. Entrances are located at 6615 111th St. SW and at 11023 Gravelly Lake Drive, Lakewood, WA 98499.

This event will still take place from 7:00 to 8:30pm and RSVPs are requested. Please call Congressman Smith’s office at (253) 593-6600 if you plan to attend.

Due to the large amount of interest in this event (which is Congressman Smith’s last town hall meeting before Congress adjourns in 2009), entrance and seating are not guaranteed – even with RSVPs. Therefore, plan to arrive early to ensure seating.

Let’s show our support of health care reform and other progressive issues -- and counter the possibly loud and disruptive efforts of right-wing opponents who will probably be protesting in or near this venue.

28. Report from attendee
Our representative, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, is fearful of a public town hall in Spokane.

She held one in Colville 80 miles north of Spokane with hundreds of participants.
August 27 she holds another in Walla Walla, inviting seniors to attend.

NARFE hosted a closed meeting for her. The rally outside the meeting
brought about 200 people with various messages about health care reform,
ending the Afghanistan war, preventing global warming, etc.

She was so fearful, that there were city police, county deputies, and
the Washington State Patrol attending the event.

Reports of the comments within the closed meeting were that most
speakers opposed her platform.

Rotarians lunched with Senator Murray with a crowd of teabaggers outside the Spokane Athletic Club.
The facilitator was prepared to manage the members and guests so that discourse was civil.

Sincerely,

Christine

29. Report on Dicks forum in PT
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/tmccarthy0/2009/09/congressman-norm-dicks-announc.php?ref=fpd

At an overflowing town hall meeting, Congressman Norm Dicks, 6th district, Washington State, announced he supported a single payer system so that all American's will have the benefit of health care. I think the Congressman was saying he is in full support of Anthony Weiner's amendment to HB3200. He was very clear when he said, "I know most people here support a single payer plan", many folks clapped, and then he said, "I am in full support of a single payer plan"!

When we entered the foray we sign in, the crowd at this point was orderly. There were so many people who arrived early as we did. The meeting was supposed to begin at 7:30 PM, but there were so many people already there the meeting began early. I would say there were several hundred people, but I can't be sure of the exact numbers. Congressman Dicks I am sure has more accurate numbers. It was performance art in its highest form. There were police everywhere. You could see the police presence as we parked our car one block away from the Conference Center. Officers lined the back of the building. We grabbed seats at the back of the overflow room. I left my very reliable husband to hold my seat while I ventured into the room to do some filming. There was a certain air or just all around weirdness going on, so many people were marching up and down the aisles with handmade and professionally printed signs. Pro-Reform, Anti-Reform, Pro-single payer, Pro-Insurance companies, there were many pro-Congressman Dicks attendees. We were some, his office sent me a personal invitation, because no doubt about it the Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Fox News nuts came with their best crazy. They came to disrupt and some of them did disrupt, however, the crowd fought back as well. I will be uploading video shortly to my YouTube account. I will come back and post exact links later, but you can look me up there too, search for terimccarthy at YouTube. There were definitely two distinct groups, although we were spread evenly around the room. We were lucky enough to sit next to an Emergency Room Physician, guess what folks, he was pro-single payer. He told us his nightmare stories of paperwork required by insurance companies, more than 30 man hours a week spent on filling out paperwork over and over again. It was quite informative. There were many on the other side, they were the classic "No Socialism, Communism, Marxism, Fascism", folks. And one absolute moron with his own sign saying Thomas Jefferson didn't believe in Socialism. Yes I know, you know, most people know, Lenin, younger than Jefferson, whatever, facts do not penetrate these folks, not ever. There were a fair number of people clearly on Medicare protesting "socialism". Yes that room was thick in ironies, and at times it felt as though madness had taken over. Poor Congressman Dicks, he had some crap to put up with.

It seemed the anti-socialist-Marxists-communist-etc folks held the floor when it came to asking questions and yelling at Congressman Dicks, but he did a phenomenal job and at times his manner was condescending towards them and fantastic! He clearly had command of the forum. There was one very crazy moment, another elderly person, called the President a socialist, Marxist, communist, fascist, anti-constitution, screaming on and on about taking the country back etc. She was the most insane in the room, she sounded like she was from a Slavic country. It was quite clear what these folks were really complaining about and it isn't health care. One person suggested the election was a coup, so there were clearly crazy people at this town hall meeting.

The questioners asked the same questions over and over again. There was the anti-abortion crowd. Why is it that everything is about abortion with these folks? Then there was the anti-immigrant crowd, with their singular question of immigrants getting access to free health care, and there were those that insisted emergency room care is free so the system is just fine...huh? You can't figure some of this stuff out though because these folks seem to be free of facts.

But the greatest part of this meeting was Norm Dicks, who is in full support of a single payer government run program to which the emergency room physician clapped and was in full support. More people there were for a single payer system than were not, more people in a Kitsap County Washington, were for a SINGLE PAYER GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH PLAN. The others were outnumbered. We have to stand up like we did during the election and ram this thing through.

Check for my videos this afternoon! Rendering takes time!!

30. Report on Baird forum
http://www.washblog.com/story/2009/9/2/13291/25809

Kudos to the Congressman and his staff for hosting a successfully civil discourse Town Hall meeting last night in Ilwaco, in Pacific County, WA. And of course, the primary range of questions had to do with Health Care/Insurance Reform. Death threats to the Congressman aside, he still managed to conduct his usual in-person Town Hall meetings in several Southwest Washington counties.
What was the process?
