===== 3. Supreme Court affirms states' rights

On December 1, the United States Supreme Court refused an appeal by the city of Garden Grove, California, which had been ordered by lower courts to return medical marijuana police seized from a patient.

The rejection means that California law enforcement must return wrongfully seized medical marijuana, and may not rely upon federal drug laws to withhold a patient's medical marijuana. Garden Grove argued that its police would be, in effect, violating federal law by returning medical marijuana to patients.

In a much larger sense, this means that, for the time being, federal law does not trump state medical marijuana laws. And that is wonderful news for the thirteen medical marijuana states, including the Evergreen State. To read the news, hit google:

===== 4. "Knock and talk" marijuana conviction reversed

Last week, the Washington State Court of Appeals overturned a Benton County marijuana conviction in which deputies conducting a "knock and talk" search did not inform the suspects of their right to refuse entry.

In a "knock and talk" search, police simply show up to a suspect's home, knock on the door, and ask for permission to enter -- usually to talk about a complaint. The Washington State Supreme Court has held that such tactics, when intended to obtain consent to conduct a warrantless search, are legal only if the suspect is first informed of their right to refuse police entry into their home.

This is called a "Ferrier warning," kinda like "Miranda warning." Which, funny enough, deputies did read to these Benton County boys, after they saw the stolen road signs hanging in their pad. The main lesson here -- besides "not so above board with the under age drinking" and "don't hang lots of stolen road signs in plain view" -- is JUST SAY NO TO POLICE SEARCHES.

The Fix 3 Strikes website now includes citations to recent research on 3-Strikes and the organizations that have signed onto the statement. The list currently includes 17 organizations and more are expected. Recent "joins" include NAACP - Alaska, Oregon and Washington State - Area Conference; the Religious Coalition for the Common Good; Peace and Justice Action Center of Spokane; Coalition of Anti-Racist Whites; Statewide Poverty Action Network; and Unitarian Universalist Voices for Justice.

Several organizations have placed 3-Strikes reform on their legislative agendas. I understand that Washington Commission on African American Affairs, which has provided legislative testimony in support of 3-Strikes reform, is considering including this issue on its agenda and is likely to do so:

The grassroots campaign has over 600 individual supporters. A phonebanking campaign is underway and we are getting a positive response from those who have agreed to write letters to legislators and are planning to attend Statewide Poverty Action Network's March on the Capitol and visits with legislators on MLK Day. The phonebanking is conducted by Justice Works! and supported by members of Coalition of Anti-Racist Whites.

Presentations to community groups continue to be scheduled. On January 10, there will be a presentation to the Black Policy Forum. An application is being prepared to present a workshop on 3-Strikes at the Seattle MLK Day event.

In a November 23, 2008 editorial, Legislature, governor must find $5 billion in spending cuts without raising taxes, Seattle Times editors suggest that, to help close the projected revenue gap, Washington state "...could repeal the "three strikes" law and parole some prisoners convicted under that law." The research cited below supports that editorial position. Public safety can be increased at less cost without 3-Strikes.

In a December 26, 2008 editorial, Periodic Review of Three Strikes Law is Prudent, Yakima Herald editors note that Three Strikes "is a concept that still needs periodic review by the Legislature to make sure it is judiciously applied, and with discretion when warranted." They point out that a long standard sentence for a serious crime that avoids costly appeals (and also avoids warehousing elderly people who pose no public safety risk but incur significant medical costs associated with age) can be a more prudent choice. She notes the traumatic childhood experiences and adult struggles with alcoholism of a 3-Striker serving a life term for 3 Robbery 2s, the efforts of a local woman who knew him as a teen to support the cause of reform, and the concerns of activists that a law designed to address violent crime has resulted in life sentences for people convicted of lower-seriousness crimes. A group of state lawmakers are calling on Gov. Christine Gregoire to step into the fight over a gravel mine on Maury Island in Puget Sound.

Fourteen legislators on Monday sent a letter asking her to suspend and possibly overturn a state lease issued in early December that cleared the way for a major expansion of the mine.

The appeal thrusts Gregoire into an issue that has prompted years of lawsuits and, most recently, a protest by hundreds of mine opponents this past weekend.

The lawmakers, led by Maury Island resident and longtime anti-mine activist, Democratic Rep. Sharon Nelson, say Gregoire has the power to temporarily stop, and go to court to overturn, the lease issued by outgoing Public Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland.

They point to a never-used provision of state ethics law enabling a governor to overturn state actions tainted by impropriety. It also allows the governor to suspend an action while the issue is investigated.

The lawmakers point to what they call Sutherland's "rushed" lease action in the waning days of his time heading the Department of Natural Resources, after he lost the election to Democrat Peter Goldmark.

"It's a serious issue as far as accountability by an outgoing elected official, and I believe it should be reviewed further," Nelson said.

She also pointed to two ethics complaints against Sutherland filed with the state Executive Ethics Board.

Those complaints allege Sutherland should have recused himself from involvement in the lease decision because the mining company, Glacier Northwest, gave $50,000 to a political committee working for his re-election.

Those complaints are under investigation, said Melanie de Leon, the ethics board's executive director.

Sutherland has said he authorized the lease after extensive review by his department, and that it contains strong environmental protections.

Marty Brown, the governor's legislative director, said he would talk with the state Attorney General's Office for guidance on the law.

Environmental groups argue that the lease, which would enable a 305-foot dock to be built over a state aquatic reserve, could harm chinook salmon and endangered orcas. They are asking state and federal judges to overturn the lease and halt construction work.

A company official said the project has extensive environmental protections and has already gotten a number of government permits. Glacier Northwest's Pete Stoltz on Monday noted this lease application had been in the works for years.

"DNR didn't make this lease decision overnight," he said.

Natural Resources Department spokeswoman Patty Henson said this was a legal matter before the governor, not the department. Regarding the ethics complaints, Henson noted that Glacier's contributions were to an independent political committee not controlled by Sutherland.

2. Sutherland Has Some 'Splainin' To Do

It's very possible that two actions by defeated state Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland were not really lovely parting gifts to big campaign contributors. And it's possible that he really didn't mean to stick it to environmentalists who had opposed his re-election.
It just looks that way.

Since he lost to Democrat Peter Goldmark on Nov. 4, Sutherland has made two big decisions that benefit contributors and anger those who opposed him.

· He decided to allow one contributor, Taylor Shellfish, to harvest geoducks it had illegally planted on state lands in Totten Inlet - geoducks estimated to be worth anywhere from $3 million to $9 million. The public comment period on the decision initially ended Monday but has been extended through Thursday.

· Sutherland awarded a lease of state tidelands off Maury Island to Glacier Northwest, which contributed $52,800 directly and indirectly to his re-election campaign. Glacier needs the lease so that it can build a 305-foot loading dock, allowing it to significantly expand its sand and gravel mine on the island.

Environmentalists - who gave heavily to Goldmark - have fought the Glacier Northwest lease for years, claiming that gravel spilled from the dock would damage the marine environment, including eelgrass beds. And shoreline property owners who opposed Taylor Shellfish's geoduck aquaculture also contributed to Sutherland's opponent.

So it's easy to see why Goldmark and his supporters are crying foul. Although Sutherland's department denies anything untoward is going on, his actions look suspiciously like vindictive, 11th-hour pokes in the eye to those who helped defeat him.

We hope that isn't the case. This newspaper endorsed Sutherland for re-election. We admired his record as lands commissioner and, before that, as Pierce County executive. But it's too easy to see these two decisions as nosegays bestowed on contributors and stink bombs lobbed at his opponents.

We're challenging this Broken System and letting Glacier & our elected officials know we are nowhere near being done with this fight to protect Puget Sound and the Maury Island nearshore.

Judith Kolokoff is currently involved with American Jews for a Just Peace and the Seattle Campaign for Gaza. Judith is a soon to be 80 year old Jewish woman human rights activist. She has been a high school educator and is a past director of the Pacific Northwest American Friends Service Committee. Judith was a founder of Jewish Voice for Peace/Seattle, an organizer supporting the anti-occupation work of the Israeli soldiers and reservists who refuse to serve in the territories.

Barbara Lahav, a Seattle native, lived over 16 years in Israel. A national board member for Brit Tzedek v�Shalom, Barbara graduated from the Bezalel School of Arts in Jerusalem, was Managing Editor for Kol Ha'Ir, a Jerusalem weekly affiliated with Haaretz Newspaper, and Administrator of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. She returned to the US in 1986 and worked for several local Jewish non-profit organizations as well as two years with the Legal Defense Fund for Representative Jim McDermott. She is a community activist for Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, Find Common Ground and Israel Policy Forum.

19. Benefit for Ft. Lewis GI coffeehouse in Lakewood 1/10

The newly formed IVAW Fort Lewis chapter, along with IVAW Seattle and the GI Voice Project have opened Coffee Strong, a GI coffee house that will serve as the as a space for military veterans, active duty soldiers, military families and supporters to meet and discuss the war, deployment, PTSD and the hardships of life in the military. Coffee Strong will also be the base of operations for the Fort Lewis Chapter.

The project is completely funded by donations from supporters – it will take over $3500 per month to keep this resource available to the community. 20. Bishop Gene Robinson in Seattle 1/12

The Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson, Episcopal bishop of New Hampshire and the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Communion, will address the Seattle community at Town Hall, 1119 8th Ave in Seattle on Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in a speech entitled, "Civil Rights in the 21st Century: Why Religion Matters." 26. Stand up for medical marijuana in Kitsap County 1/26

Kitsap County continues its prosecution of Pam and Bruce Olson, two more medical marijuana patients busted by WestNET, a federally-funded "task force" that earns most of its revenue through asset forfeiture.

Pam Olson plead guilty last year in order to avoid jail time, and received home arrest. On Monday, January 26, the prosecutor will present pre-trial motions to deny Bruce Olson the use of his medical marijuana defense.

We hope to create a visible presence in the court room for this hearing. If at all possible, please plan on attending.

It is six pages long, with three reasons to deny Mr. Olson his medical
defense:

First, an anonymous informant told WestNET -- a federally-funded "drug
task force" that funds itself by seizing the assets of the people they
bust -- that he had witnessed Bruce Olson sell 2 ounces of marijuana.

Second, the amount of medical marijuana was too much, and higher than the
"presumed 60-day supply" defined by the new Department of Health rules.
WestNET task force members found 48 marijuana plants in various stages of
growth, 12 of which were flowering. Prosecutors claims those plants
yielded them 19 pounds of usable marijuana. That is over 6 ounces of
usable marijuana for every plant, or over 25 ounces per flowing plant.
Both of these numbers are highly unlikely.

Third, the prosecution is relying on the "Shepherd ruling," which requires a physician to state how much marijuana their patient needs for a sixty-day supply. This ruling was addressed by the Washington State Legislature last year when it passed SB 6032. The idea that prosecutors are still trying to use it suggests they either did not get the memo, or are simply disingenuous public servants.

33. Medical marijuana defense allowed for one charge and denied for the other

Kitsap County's motion to deny Bruce Olson from mentioning his medical marijuana defense was (mostly) denied by the court. The court room, which only had two rows of seating, was filled with 25 spectators. The pre-trial hearing took over two hours, with close to twenty motions heard.

Judge Leila Mills did forbid the medical marijuana defense to one of the two charges in the case: possession with intent to distribute. The judge ruled that RCW 69.51A can not be used as a defense to an intent to distribute charge. However, both of the charges will be heard in the same case, so the jury will hear about medical marijuana, but then the judge will instruct them that medical marijuana doesn't apply to the second charge, just the first.

The good news is that, in order to prove intent to distribute, Kitsap County is relying solely upon the word of a questionable WestNET informant named Mr. Kenny. WestNET is the multi-agency drug task force funded through asset forfeiture, which is "hosted" by the Kitsap County Sheriff. This multiple-conviction felon worked for WestNET, presumably to avoid prosecution on drug-related charges. In court, he was painted as a lifelong criminal and an admitted alcoholic, and the defense informed the court that it would challenge his competency.

Bruce Olson made it over this hurdle, and he lives to fight another day. That day is Friday, February 6 at 1:30 p.m. Please mark your calendar.

Take the 72 Hours Challenge

Moments ago, four intrepid writers—Sherman Alexie, Pam Houston, T.M. McNally and Devin Sullivan—received keys to their hotel rooms and the “secret ingredients” for the new works they will begin writing to be unveiled three days from now at 72 Hours, Friday, February 13 at Hugo House at 7:30 p.m.
While the event has been sold out for months, you can still join in the fun by taking the 72 Hours challenge. Using the “secret ingredients” listed below, the same ones the writers were given, we are inviting everyone in the Hugo House community to take the challenge of drafting a new piece of writing in 72 hours and reading the results on Saturday, February 14, at 11 a.m. in the Hugo House Cabaret.

To participate, begin writing now. Then come to Hugo House on Saturday morning prepared to strut your newly minted work. There will be 15 five-minute slots for fearless writers who think they're up to the challenge, with all new work read to be published on the Hugo House Web site.

50. Candlelight vigil against domestic violence 3/12 in Seattle

On March 2, 1995, Susana Remerata Blackwell, Phoebe Dizon, Veronica Laureta, and Baby Kristine (Ms. Blackwell's unborn child) were murdered by Susana's estranged husband in the King County Courthouse. Since that day, The Asian & Pacific Islander Women & Family Safety Center (Safety Center) has been committed to holding an annual vigil to remember these women and others whose lives were destroyed by violence.

On March 12, 2009, the 14th Annual Candlelight Vigil will be held for this purpose at the King County Courthouse at 4:00 pm.

We hope that you will join us in attending the event and in joining us in sending the message that "domestic violence will NOT be tolerated in our communities".

Like many cyclists, I like using Nickerson and always thought it should be a complete street, safely serving the needs of bicyclists, among other users.

*We have an opportunity on Wednesday, March 4 to tell the Seattle Department of Transportation that this is what we want and need!

**Please attend the West Nickerson Street Open House
**Wednesday, March 4 from 5 ? 7 p.m.* in Seattle Pacific University’s Demaray Hall, south of Bertona St. on the campus.

The Seattle DOT can convert the street from four lanes to three, striping uphill bicycle lanes and adding downhill sharrows along with better crosswalks. This is called a road diet and has been implemented successfully on several Seattle streets. Nickerson will than be a better, safer street for all users.

Please attend all or part of the open house and let the city know we want bicycle and pedestrian facilities incorporated into this project!

53. Skagit Human Rights Festival 3/21

On Saturday March 21, Mike and I will be giving a workshop from 1:00-3:00 pm at the Skagit Valley Food Co-op and then we're doing an open set (20-30 minutes) at the Jim Page concert at The Lincoln Theatre that evening in Mount Vernon. There's a reception at 5:30 and the concert starts at 7:00.

These events are part of the 6th Annual Skagit Human Rights Festival.

Our workshop will be in two parts: The first half will be learning how to empower our individual voices using good voice techniques, for singing or any kind of public speaking. The second half will be learning some songs that have been used over decades to support human rights.

This year's theme is "Living Responsibly with Our Neighbors in Our World for Our Children's Future". The theme for the March 21 events is "Celebrating Community".

Bert Sacks will be speaking about US involvement in the Middle East, including the US position on Israel/Gaza, and the current state of affairs in Iraq. Sacks traveled to Iraq nine times, from 1996 to 2002. On his last trip he accompanied his congressperson, Jim McDermott, and Representatives David Bonior and Mike Thompson. Sacks also led five delegations of the anti-sanctions group "Voices in the Wilderness" and facilitated three delegations sponsored by Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility. For a 1997 trip to Iraq to deliver "medicines and toys" to Iraqi children, in violation of U.S. sanctions law, he was fined $10,000 by the U.S. government. His blog has information about his lawsuit against the U.S. government over the fine and various rulings in the case, which went to the U.S. Supreme Court. He has not paid any fine.

United for Peace of Pierce County and the MICAH Project of First United Methodist Church are pleased to present an Afghanistan documentary festival. Come join us on March 21st at 7:00pm as we kick off this series with an introduction to Afghan food and culture. Our hope is to assist in the promotion of peace and developing an awareness of the Afghani people and their arts. The reception and all movies are free of charge and open to the public.


With the Afghanistan war ramping up and Pakistan destabilizing, we want to know more about the history of Afghanistan and the nature of the current conflict. In the process of broadening our own understanding, we hope to offer the people of Tacoma an insightful glimpse into what has already been an eight-year conflict and one which is projected to extend for many, many more years. For too long this war has been swept out of sight. Overshadowed by the Iraq war. It's time for us all to understand what we have to gain and lose, and explore how to stabilize or contain the region. The nature of material in these documentaries is in depth, raw and, at times, very graphic. These documentaries are not suited for young children. Linda Frank is active locally with several Tacoma/Pierce County peace-justice groups including United for Peace of Pierce County; People for Peace, Justice, and Healing; and the Northwest Middle East Peace Forum. She helped found the Tacoma chapter of Women in Black. Linda served as media liaison for the Citizens Hearing on the US Legality of US Actions in Iraq.

Linda Frank is a native New Yorker and former student of Judaism who, prior to the events of 9-11, had little exposure to politics, current events, or activism. Moved by 9-11 with a desire to help her country, Linda sought to understand the issues of global unrest that so devastated her hometown and our nation. intrigued by Rudi Guiliani's declining 20 million dollars in relief funds from a Saudi prince because of the implication that Israel's treatment of Palestinians had something to do with 9-11, Linda decided finally to learn about the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Disturbed by the details of what she was starting to learn, and about the impact that conflict was having on America, she took a 15-month unpaid sabbatical to engage in the issue. She networked with groups and individuals in Israel, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and throughout the U.S.; she outreached (briefed) to national and local media; she lobbied Congress; and has organized and spoken at numerous community events, hosting Israeli and Palestinian speakers and others who could help fill in, for Tacomans, the missing pieces of the missing peace.

In 2005, Linda was nominated for the Greater Tacoma Peace Prize. Linda finds motivation/inspiration in The Golden Rule, found in all major faith traditions ("Do not to others what you wouldn't want done to you"); from the historic Rabbi Hillel's "If I am not for myself, who will be? But if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?" and in a Catholic Worker motto, "If you want peace, work for justice."

Attendees at Saturday's meeting will have the opportunity to fill out post cards apologizing for the war, which will be sent to 3 organizations in Iraq, for distribution to individual Iraqis.

Julia Bolz will share about her work in Afghanistan building and repairing schools

In 2002, Julia, a nationally-recognized speaker and social justice advocate, founded a project in Afghanistan called “Journey with an Afghan School.” Together with her American teammates, Julia has built and supplied 15 new schools and repaired 15 others destroyed by war. They also provide schools with clean water; textbooks and supplies; provide teacher trainings, libraries and computer centers; and facilitate cultural exchanges. Currently they serve over 25,000 Afghan students.

Coffee Strong is a project of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) that serves as a space for military veterans, active duty soldiers, military families and supporters to meet and discuss the war, deployment, PTSD and the hardships of life in the military. Coffee Strong will also be the base of operations for the Fort Lewis Chapter. Backbone Campaign applauds the organizers of the Vision for Vashon public forum coming up on April 25. This is an exciting opportunity for all Islanders to discuss ways in which we can create a more sustainable community--despite the economic crisis we have entered. From these discussions will arise working interest groups to implement projects which will lead us in a positive direction toward this sustainability. The forum will take place on Saturday, April 25, at the "O" Open Space for Arts and Community. You will have the opportunity to discuss in small groups each of these issues:

Renewable Energy
Improved Transportation
Local Exchange Currency
Local Sustainability Projects

As of today there are 4275 reported US military deaths in Iraq and 673 in Afghanistan. An unthinkable number of Iraqis and Afghanis have died or been wounded and a huge portion of the population has been displaced. We must keep reminding our fellow citizens that the devastating violence continues to take its heartbreaking toll on military and civilians. Arlington Northwest is a powerful visual reminder of this sad fact.

The Greenway is a national scenic byway that stretches over 100 miles along I-90 from the waterfront in Seattle all the way to Central Washington. Since 1990, a public-private coalition has preserved over 200,000 acres in the Greenway for education, recreation, and environmental stewardship.

The Council is currently considering legislation to help protect 7,000 acres along the Raging River in the Mountains to Sound Greenway. The measure would use Conservation Futures funds to purchase a conservation easement on 4,000 of those acres, closing one of the last remaining gaps in the Greenway. The Conservation Futures program is funded by a dedicated revenue stream supported by a voter-approved levy to purchase open space.

87. Bicycle Alliance of Washington summer events

Legislative Update

Cyclists have reason to celebrate! Two of our legislative priorities have made it through the session and have been signed into law.

SB5482 (Section 10) requires that all new traffic signals and substantially upgraded ones must be capable of being triggered by bicycles and motorcycles stopped at intersections. Jurisdictions with vehicle-activated traffic signals must also set up a procedure for recording signal issues and prioritize those most in need of detection improvements if funding becomes available.

SubHB1793 strengthens the state's Safe Routes to School Program by placing it directly into statute and providing greater legitimacy and visibility to the program. This underscores both the importance of non-motorized transportation and the value of daily physical activity for our young people.

Bike to Work Month Activities

May is National Bike Month and May 15 is Bike to Work Day. Communities around Washington State have planned a variety of activities to encourage biking to work and school. Our website has details on the ones that we know about.

BAW's Dave Janis will be attending Bike to Work Spokane's Kick-off Breakfast on May 11-say howdy to him if you're there! And the Bike Alliance is co-hosting a commuter station at the Bikestation for King County's Bike to Work Day celebration on May 15. The station will be open 6 - 10 AM. Be sure to drop by for some goodies and a greeting!

Spokane's Master Bike Plan: May 18 Public Hearing

Spokane City Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed Master Bike Plan on Monday, May 18, 2009 at 6PM in City Council Chambers. This is an opportunity for cyclists to voice their approval for the proposed infrastructure and policy changes to support biking in Spokane. The most recent draft documents will be available at the City Planning website. Questions and comments may directed to Ken Pelton.

Whatcom Council of Governments Named Bicycle Friendly Business by LAB

The Whatcom Council of Governments (WCOG) was awarded a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Business designation from the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) in 2008. The LAB stated that "highlights of the application that reviewers pointed out included the Smart Trips on-line diary, work with local schools regarding bike safety, and membership in the Community Car Share program". Half of WCOG's 12 full time staff members regularly commute to work by bicycle. These six bicycling staff members made more than 1,100 bicycle trips in 2008, totaling more than 6,000 miles, and kept over five tons of pollutants out of the atmosphere.

WCOG is especially proud to be awarded the Bicycle Friendly Business designation in this first year of the League's program. The award confirms the importance of the innovative directions WCOG has taken and strengthens the commitment local elected officials have made to continue to support investments in bicycling transportation.

Another Bike Friendly Employer in Bellingham

Bob Pritchett, president of Logos Bicycle Software in Bellingham, was surprised to see an IT department purchase request that included everything necessary to set up a bike repair shop.

With more than 170 employees, Logos has a number of serious cyclists who work on their own bikes and are willing to help co-workers with simple repairs. They even got a long unused bike rack into shape, encouraging more employees to trade four wheels for two.

"Many of our employees bike to work and others go for rides during the day. Having a fully-equipped bike shop on site is a great way to encourage healthy habits that are good for the environment," said Pritchett.

I am delighted to be part of the Bicycle Alliance family! I've been on staff a mere five weeks, yet some of my initial impressions have been repeatedly confirmed:

BAW has a sterling reputation across the state, and particularly in Olympia. Our input is sought by lawmakers in order to create sound and actionable public policy.
One of BAW's greatest strengths is its passionate, dedicated and multi-talented volunteer corps. This includes the Board, Advisory Board, and members as well.
The cycling movement enjoys favorable public opinion on many fronts - as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle, as related to environmental awareness and activism, for its role in community revitalization, and as an affordable and viable transportation choice in an economic downturn -- so now is the time to come together and make progress!
On a personal note, I am an avid cycle tourist, having logged miles on six continents. (If only Antarctica had roads and/or bikes with studded tires, I could have scored a perfect "7".) While I seemed to have no qualms about exploring exotic locales by bicycle, for many years I was too fearful to cycle commute in my own hometown. But all of that has changed! Thanks to bicycle-friendly infrastructure and a critical mass of cyclists on the road during commuter rush hour, I feel the benefit of safety in numbers. And thanks to the work of the Bicycle Alliance and others, Washington State is ranked #1 as the most bicycle-friendly state in the nation by the League of American Bicyclists. I look forward to working with you to keep Washington great for cyclists, to continue our progress in Olympia, and to set a positive example for other communities around the country.

Tyler Boudreau, who served the Marines for twelve years, will ride across the US, engaging communities in what he calls Real War Talks to focus on the realities and human costs of war. He will speak, read sections of his book, Packing Inferno, and answer questions. Tyler invites you to join him for the evening or part of his ride, called “The Other Side” Cross Country Cycle Tour.
“In its most fundamental sense, this project is about searching for what's on "the other side" of the battlefield. It is very much about veterans who have found themselves hurled suddenly to the other side of a catastrophic injury, or Post-Traumatic Stress, or an inexplicably dysfunctional life in the aftermath of war. But it is also about the nature of warfare itself. There is a great mythology associated with battle. We seek "the other side" of that mythology. We seek the other side of ourselves. We travel to "the other side" of the country to find it.”

Rachel Corrie was 23 years old when she traveled to Palestine in 2003, in an effort to bring peace to one small place in the Middle East. Instead of peace, she found her death. As she attempting to protect the home of a Palestinian family, she was killed by the bulldozer sent to destroy the place.

On May 31st, her parents, Cindy and Craig Corrie, bring Rachel's story to Wayside. In attempting to come to terms with her death, they started their own mission to learn about the community where Rachel died, and to find a way to carry on her work. Their presentation on the 31st will share their experience.

Something remarkable is happening in the fields and orchards of the Pacific Northwest. Small family farmers are making a comeback. They're growing much healthier food, and lots more food per acre, while using less energy and water than factory farms. For decades Northwest agriculture was focused on a few big crops for export. But to respond to climate change and the end of cheap energy, each region needs to produce more of its own food and to grow food more sustainably. Good Food visits producers, farmers’ markets, distributors, stores, restaurants and public officials who are developing a more sustainable food system for all. This lively tour of Washington’s sustainable agriculture movement offers several lucid arguments in favor of smaller, more efficient farms, and purchasing locally grown crops. Still, no argument is as convincing as the marvelous bounty laid before our eyes in this film.

100. Pastors for Peace caravan to Cuba in Seattle 7/18

Many people seem to think that big changes in US-Cuba policy have already taken place! But the truth is that--except for Cuban American family travel--nothing has really changed.

The blockade is still in place. Hurricane reconstruction supplies and other essential goods are still prohibited to come from the US. The travel ban is still in place. Cuba is still on the US government's terrorist list while the real anti-terrorists, the Cuban 5, remain in prison. Guantanamo Bay remains illegally occupied.

A few weeks ago there was a flurry of statements from Latin American presidents, US politicians on both sides of the House, business leaders, retired US generals, and to a degree President Obama, saying it is time for the US to change policy on Cuba. Signatures are being gathered in both houses of Congress for a bill that would enable ALL US citizens to freely travel to Cuba (House bill HR 874 / Senate bill S 428). It is clear that there has never been such potential for ending the 48 year old travel ban and blockade.

But in recent weeks it has gone quiet, and the White House and US State Department have been making discouraging noises about any further steps on their part. It is clear that nothing further will happen without a lot more pressure from the grassroots. Which is why we are organizing our 20th Friendshipment Caravan to Cuba this July to both express our solidarity and build momentum and pressure for a radical policy change.

We will spend 9 days visiting Cuba as it is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the revolution while slowly rebuilding from the 3 devastating hurricanes that hit the island in the Fall of 2008. We will be donating more than a hundred tons of humanitarian aid to help with hurricane reconstruction, as well as up to 10 school buses and trucks and, as Fidel would say, millions of tons of love and solidarity.

This caravan will have 14 routes stopping in 140 cities throughout the US and Canada. At every stop we will be talking to local people and local media about the need to lobby their elected representatives for a new Cuba policy. And when we cross the border into Mexico, bound for Cuba, we will be making a direct challenge to US policy--taking ourselves and the aid to Cuba without a US government license. The more people, the bigger the statement we are making.

SO . we are calling on our supporters to make this the year that you come to Cuba with us.

JOIN US when a vehicle passes through Seattle on July 6th or meet us down in Texas on July 18th as we start preparations for crossing the border. We will be in Cuba July 24th . Aug 2nd and we will proudly cross back into Texas the morning of August 3rd.

Small-Business Leaders, Local Residents Host Green Jobs Event
Call on Congress to Pass Strong Clean Energy Jobs Bill to Jump-Start Job Creation in Seattle

Local small-business leaders and residents of Seattle will host a green-jobs rally and tour of area clean energy homes on Wednesday, May 27, in the High Point neighborhood of West Seattle. The event is being organized by the Seattle chapter of MoveOn.org, which has about 50,000 members in the Seattle metro area. At the rally, local residents will call on Congress to pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which the House of Representatives is expected to vote on this summer. If passed, the bill would create high-paying jobs, reduce electricity and heating costs for local households, and keep America competitive in the global economy.

WHAT: Clean Energy Jobs Day – A tour of the High Point neighborhood as an example of how green energy initiatives create jobs, better communities, and a safer world.

WHEN: 4:00 pm, Wednesday, May 27, 2009. The tour is expected to last 1-2 hours.

WHO: Join MoveOn.org members and meet people who are incorporating green concepts into their Seattle lifestyles. Meet High Point residents, a realtor, a small-business owner, and a candidate for Seattle city council.

MEDIA FEATURES: See green-built sidewalks and roads, Longfellow Creek, green spaces, a pond park, walking trail, waterfall, and the Seattle skyline. See green homes constructed by five different construction companies. And while it’s under construction, catch a glimpse of Neighborhood House, which will include 20,000 square feet of classrooms, gathering spaces, social service offices, and technology labs—one of the largest built-green projects in the country.

Stop #1: Resident home of Jennifer Cobb, 3123 SW Raymond Street. MoveOn organizers will provide an overview of the local clean energy economy and talk about potential expansion. Yves Vetter, the owner of a small, local green retrofitting business will speak. Jen will show us the green features in her home, constructed by Saltaire.

Stop #2: Wendy Hughes-Jelen of Green Works Realty will lead us on an environmental walking tour of the neighborhood on our way to one the neighborhood’s model homes. Wendy will explain High Point’s green features, which include bio-swales, different forms of pervious and impervious surfaces, and landscaping designed for water filtration. From the home, you can view the green space, pond park and walking trail, waterfall, and Seattle skyline.

Stop #3: Resident home of David Ginsberg. David will show us the green features in his home, constructed by Devland, Inc. David is currently a candidate for Seattle City Council and his platform includes a commitment to the greening of Seattle.

Directions: Take the West Seattle Bridge to the stop light at the end and and turn left on 35th Avenue SW. After about 2 miles, turn left on Raymond Street. Just past 32nd Avenue SW is Jennifer Cobb’s home at 3123 SW Raymond Street. Bus: Route 21 departs about every 30 minutes along First Avenue downtown and along 35th Avenue in West Seattle.

103. Meeting of Seattle interfaith group on Iraq 6/6

The INOC general meeting will be held as usual on Saturday, June 6 at 3:00 pm (1st Saturday of the month) at: Keystone United Church of Christ, 5019 Keystone Place North.

Abdi Sami, who is originally from Iran, will discuss the trip to that country that he recently organized and led with 25 persons from our local area.

Abdi was also the facilitator for Rick Steves last year, when Rick visited Iran and filmed a one hour program that has been shown on PBS around the country. This should be a very interesting presentation!

104. Justice Works meeting in new Seattle location 6/5

We are now in our new location and loving it. We even have a parking lot now!

Sadly, the serious challenges we faced with our previous landlord still threaten Justice Works! He has filed a lawsuit against us to attempt to reverse the decision of the City of Seattle Hearing Examiner which allowed us to break our lease. Since we are a corporation, we can't go pro se. We must hire an attorney. So, we are seeking a pro bono (or very low fee) civil attorney to help with this struggle. We have done a lot of work to document the problems we have faced and feel confident that based on the facts (and our diligent documentation of those facts) we will have no problem winning BUT we don't have the money needed for the attorney fees.

Juneteenth marks the date in June that slaves in Texas belatedly got word of the Emancipation Proclamation and learned they had been freed. It is widely celebrated in the African American community. Technology will enable Seattle lawmaker to reach thousands of households at once

OLYMPIA – Constituents in Seattle’s 46th Legislative District are invited to join in a telephone virtual town-hall meeting next Tuesday evening.

Roughly two months after the 2009 Legislative Session reached its end, Rep. Scott White will hold a virtual town-hall meeting, which will give people in his district the opportunity to voice their concerns and get their questions answered in real-time.

“I value every chance I get to meet with my constituents; in mid-March my seatmates and I held an on-site town hall meeting that was very successful, but then I heard from many constituents who were interested in attending but could not make it,” said White, who is serving his first term in the Legislature. “While I will continue to meet with my constituents in-person over coffee and at town hall meetings, I do want to make it easy for everybody this time by holding a ‘virtual town meeting’ via telephone.”

On Tuesday, June 23 at about 6:20 p.m. phones across White’s district will ring giving people who answer the option to take part in the virtual town-hall meeting by simply staying on the line. For the next hour, White will take questions from people who participate in the meeting.

“The whole point is to make it easy for people to access their government and to engage in a dialogue with their elected State Representative. With this new telephone technology I can reach thousands of people, and they don’t even have to leave their homes,” White added.

North Seattle’s 46th Legislative District includes the neighborhoods of Bitter Lake, Broadview, Bryant, Carkeek, Cedar Park, Chelsea, (North) Greenlake, (East) Greenwood, Haller Lake, Hawthorne Hills, Jackson Park, Lake City, Laurelhurst, Licton Springs, Magnuson Park, Maple Leaf, Matthews Beach, Meadowbrook, Morningside, North College Park, Northgate, North Park, Olympic Hills, Paramount Park, Pinehurst, Ravenna, Roosevelt, Sand Point, Victory Heights, View Ridge, Wedgwood and Windermere.

The virtual meeting will conclude by 7:20 p.m. Those who do not get the chance to ask a question during the hour-long call will have the option to leave White a voicemail, and each person leaving a message will get a call back from Rep. White.

Cell phone users will not receive a call, as the technology that makes the virtual town meeting possible does not call cell numbers. The National Peace Academy in the United States will take its place among leading education and peace-building institutions across the U.S. and around the world who are focused on advancing cultures of peace. Dorothy J. Maver, Ph.D., is Co-Director of the National Peace Academy. She is an educator and peacebuilder whose keynote is inspiring cooperation on behalf of the common good. Previously, Dot served as President/CEO of Peace Partnership International and, before that, as Executive Director of The Peace Alliance and Campaign for a US Department of Peace. She was the National Campaign Manager for Kucinich for President 2004. She is a co-founding member of the Vermont Peace Academy and a founding board member of the Center for Cooperative Principles. An innovative educator with a teaching background in Health, Physical Education, Psychology and Philosophy at both the high school and university levels, she is on faculty with Polaris College, Denmark, was part of the 2008 lecture series at the Graduate Institute in Connecticut, USA, and the 2009 Bridging the Gap speaker series at Regis University in Denver, USA. 119. Learn about CA health care workers and their struggle with SEIU in Seattle 8/3

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Dramatic history is being made in California.

Some 150,000 California health care workers, who have been members of United Health Care Workers - West, have formed a democratic new union, the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW). United Health Care Workers - West was a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). SEIU removed all of the democratically-elected officers of the union for opposing the national union's drive to centralize power. The breaking point came when the local's leadership resisted SEIU's efforts to remove 65,000 home care and nursing home workers from their local, and place them in a corrupt local, without any opportunity for the workers to vote on whether they wanted the transfer.

SEIU trusteed the local for refusal to comply with a forced transfer - the national union seized control, taking away the local from the members. What could the members do? They formed a new union. And they petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to hold elections, so that they could make their own decision about whether to be in a union controlled by the members. Incredibly, petitions have been filed supported by a majority of the members in 360 facilities of over 100 employers, signed by almost 100,000 of the 150,000 members.

It's a tough fight. The first large battle took place in Fresno. SEIU reportedly sent 1,000 paid staff and out-of-State members paid by the union, and spent over ten million dollars. SEIU used the same line that bosses use when workers try to organize, threatening that the workers would lose their benefits if they went with their union. Despite the unprecedented expenditures and massive staff presence, SEIU won the election by a couple of hundred votes, for a group of 10,000 workers.

But the real damage is to the labor movement. That million dollars could have been spent on organizing more members into the labor movement, instead of on denying 150,000 workers control of their union. And, of course, the 1,000 paid staff, instead of building the labor movement, spent their efforts tearing apart one of the largest, most democratic and most dynamic locals on the west coast.

Now the struggle moves to the San Francisco area, where tens of thousands of home care and hospital workers will have the opportunity to vote on their future.

122. Cannabis Defense Alliance to meet 8/3 in Seattle

Cannabis Defense Coalition meets the first Monday of the month at Dunshee

At the meeting we'll discuss:

1. Case Tracking. CDC has been failing on its primary mission (tracking and attending medical marijuana cases) for the past month or two. We need to get back on track, and discuss how to effectively distribute this labor amongst our volunteers.

2. Office Space. We are looking for office/retail space in Seattle. We believe this will help us fulfil these primary duties by creating a physical space for cannabis activists to congregate and work. We've identified a number of spots, but finding a landlord comfortable with renting to us has been a challenge. We could use more help securing commercial space.

3. IRS Determination Letter. The IRS made a positive determination on our application for 501(c)(3) status. The CDC is now a federally-recognized tax exempt nonprofit organization.

4. DOC Update. The state Dept. of Corrections has some fucked up medical marijuana policies. The CDC filed a public disclosure request seeking all documents related to these policies, in hopes of finding out who, why or how we got such fucked up policies. DOC has responded, and the ball is in our court. We need to send a crew to Olympia soon, meet the folks at the DOC, and pound through the hundreds or thousands of pages of documents they've collected for us.

5. Courtroom Observation Companion. We've compiled many useful resources about medical marijuana in Washington State and put them in a printed zine for our volunteers. This guide will likely be useful to others, including attorneys, doctors, patients, and the everyday pot activist. We're about to print our first big batch, around 4000 copies, which will cost ~$1500. We have numerous pledges for this project, but no donations yet.

6. Printed Schwag. We're almost out of our STOP ARRESTING stickers. We've got more coming (3000 stickers for $300, which came out of the CDC general fund). We're looking at around $3000 for printed schwag, which we hope will pay for itself in short order. We are looking for donations (and loans) to pay the printer.

124. Cannabis Defense Alliance August cases need monitors

1. Mason County v. Mower/Reed next Monday

John Reed and Karen Mower were raided in January 2008 by the "Special Operations Group" maintained by the Mason County Sheriff's Department. The day after the raid, the Sheriff's Office issued a press release stating that they had raided two medical marijuana patients who -- in their view -- had too much marijuana. Mason County Sheriff's Deputies estimate each plant would yield one pound of marijuana, and placed the value of the grow at $200,000 "if sold on the street."

This case has been dragging on down, and Mason County is spending a great deal of time and energy screwing these patients. At this hearing, the judge will make a ruling on Douglas Hiatt's motion for reconsideration to allow the medical marijuana defense at trial. In short, this is a big day in this trial. If you can make it to Shelton on Monday, please attend. If you know anyone near Shelton or Olympia, please forward this on to them, or tell them about this hearing.

2. Grant County v. David Hagar next Tuesday

David Hagar was growing medical marijuana as designated provider for his mother Rosa, an authorized patient. Grant County Sheriff's raided him earlier this year, taking 27 plants (10 of which had no roots, 3 of which were dead) and all his growing equipment.

Mr. Hagar started again growing medical marijuana for his mother, and a few months ago, was raided and arrested by the Grant County Sheriff for the second time this year. This time, his mother was present, and detectives took four marijuana plants, all the growing equipment, and her medical marijuana recommendation.

Seattle Hempfest is next weekend, August 15 and 16. The Cannabis Defense Coalition will be sharing a booth with Grammas for Ganja in the Hemposium area, booth 115A. A number of CDC members are speaking at the event:

We can also canvas the general crowd for email addresses -- trading stickers for email addresses works exceptionally well for this.

If you volunteer to collect email addresses at Hempfest, we'll have a nice program -- collect 40 email addresses, get a free t-shirt.

City of Auburn v. Garret Snyder:

Pulled over by Auburn Police on February 5, 2009 for texting while at a stop light. Was arrested for possession of 16 ounces of medical marijuana belonging to his mother, an authorized patient. He is her designated provider, but did not have that documentation at the time of arrest. He received a medical marijuana authorization ten days after the arrest. Took a six-month deferred prosecution, $500 fine, and $100 drug class.

Okanogan v. Marcie Pier:

Her recommendation was from Dr. Leveque (who wasn't licensed in Washington at the time). She now has a recommendation from Dr. Orvald. Police came in last year, looked at her twenty plants, took samples, and went away. They left all plants and equipment, allowing her to continue growing. In December she received charging papers in the mail. Police never came back, never told her to stop growing medical marijuana. Fearing a year-long ordeal, she pled to a lesser charge -- she refused to take a drug charge, so they offered her misdemeanor obstructing a police officer. No time, no fine, one year probation.

Snohomish v. Eric Mevis:

Mr. Mevis has mandibular dystonia and can't speak. He was pulled over without his license, which was listed as suspended owing to the Department of Licensing mailing stuff to the wrong address. DoL corrected the error, but the arresting officer was interested only in what first appeared on his screen. Mr. Mevis was arrested with a half gram of marijuana. Pled to driving without a license in exchange for dropping of the marijuana charges -- $500 fine.

The CDC general fund balance is $2564.74. Here's what we're spending money on lately, and where it's coming from:

* Courtroom Observation Companion

We are printing 2500 copies of our medical marijuana guide zine thingy. The previous price quote was totally wrong. Cost is $2053 after shipping from Phoenix Media in Portland -- 82 cents per copy. Thus far we have collected two $500 donations, one $500 loan, and $553 was used from the CDC general fund.

* Medical Marijuana T-Shirts

Ordered 300 American Apparel t-shirts to sell at Hempfest. Five colors: army, ash grey, black, cranberry and white. We have four designs: 1) the STOP ARRESTING MEDICAL MARIJUANA USERS stop sign, centered on front; 2) the CDC logo centered on front; 3) "No plea for me" front with CDC logo back; and 4) "RCW 69.51A: VOTER APPROVED SINCE 1998" front with CDC logo
back. Cost for made in America shirts is $2569 or $8.56 per shirt from Angry Squid Ink in Tukwila. Thus far we have collected a $500 donation and a $1500 loan to make this happen.

* Stop Arresting Stickers

Stickers are super popular. We hope to use them to entice hordes of Hempfest attendees to sign up for medical marijuana email updates. We've gone through nearly 3,000 of these stickers in the last 6 months. Cost is $342 after shipping for 3,000 from Sticker Guy in Reno. Paid for from the CDC general fund.

* Washington State Potline

The toll-free potline continues to receive numerous calls per week, and 1-4 arrest reports per month. We run our own Asterisk VOIP server, which for a while this summer wasn't the most reliable. We recently moved the potline to a virtual asterisk server from a company that specializes in that sort of thing. The server is donated by a CDC member whose business requires the service anyway. Our connectivity costs are around $10-30 per month, which are donated by the same member.

125. Bike Share Expo in King County 8/11 & 8/12

Many have heard of bike sharing from stories about Paris’ Velib or Washington, D.C.’s SmartBike program, but wondered how it actually works. In Paris, Montreal, Washington, DC, and other regions around the world, people are using bike sharing as a new mobility option.

To help people learn more about bike sharing, King County will host three bike share providers for a Bike Share Expo August 11th and 12th. The vendors will display their newest bike share systems, including bikes and stations, and allow attendees to experience one of the hottest trends in mobility. The Expo will be held:

Ø Wednesday, August 12, Noon - 8 pm, Redmond Town Center

The Cannabis Defense Coalition is throwing a Saturday night Hempfest after
party for CDC members, Hempfest speakers, and all pot patients whose cases
we've tracked in the past year since our inception.

The Rally is going to be fun and family friendly with great music, speakers, picnic, flotilla, and beach march. We'll start at 10am by creating human mural of an Orca Whale on the beach. Bring a black long sleeve shirt cloth or umbrella (or white - but we need less of those). We have an airplane to do a flyover and photographer Ray Pfortner will be in it to get the shot! Then we'll parade on the beach, enjoy speakers, live music and picnic together until 2pm. Bring food or get hot dogs and drinks there.

August 15 is the day that Glacier was initially allowed to restart construction of its gravel loading pier. Now they won't be coming for at least some time, and together we can make sure that's NEVER. Congratulations to all of you for all of your work - I believe that it all helped.

Now Vashon-Maury really has the opportunity to really be the "Pivot Point" and "Poster Child for Saving Puget Sound" - Let's do it!

This October 11th in Washington DC potentially the largest LGBT protest will take place to demand equal rights for LGBT people. Here in Seattle a number of organizations are working to have a solidarity demonstration to send a clear unambigous message to Obama and the Democrats that WE WANT MARRIAGE EQUALITY RIGHTS!

While on the campaign trail Obama promised to repeal the bigoted Defense of Marriage Act and Don't Ask Don't Tell policies. However, despite having majorities in Congress the possession of the White House and support amongst the working class and youth, the Democrats have not acted by mounting a determined effort for equal rights for all. In fact, Obama has more than backpedaled, he has made statements that defend Defense of Marriage Act. Further, in the face of mass opposition to Prop 8, Obama and the Democrats have NOT sent a clear message of support but rather support civil unions which do not offer equal protection under the law for LGBT people.

140. Young Israeli war resisters to speak in Seattle 9/15

The Shministim Tour is a series of conversations between two young Israeli women who went to jail for following their consciences and Americans from all communities and political backgrounds. Maya Wind and Netta Mishly will speak about their personal journeys from high school to military prison; a path shared by dozens of young Shministim but wholly unique in each case. The Shministim (Hebrew for "twelfth-graders" ) are an informal group of young Israelis who openly declare their refusal to join the Israeli military. Every year, the Shministim sign a different letter, a tradition harkening back to the 1970s when the first Shministim class expressed their dissent in a letter to Prime Minister Golda Meir. The 2008 letter, signed by both Maya and Netta, declares, "We cannot be moral and serve the occupation."

The Arlington Northwest display is a traveling memorial to US military service members who have died in the Iraq (4344) and Afghanistan (830) wars. The headstones, one for each of those who died, are arrayed as they would be at the Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, DC. This is a nonpartisan memorial designed to raise public awareness of the cost of war and to recognize the sacrifices made by all involved. You are invited to participate in the creation of this memorial by helping to install the headstones. You are also encouraged to inscribe a placard with the name, age, and date of death for one or more soldiers to be placed on the blank memorial markers. A “Book of Remembrance” will be located in the information area for you to record any thoughts or dedications you may wish to offer. We respectfully request observers not bring signs or banners.

149. Interfaith Network of Concern for the People of Iraq meets in Seattle 10-3

1. The INOC general meeting will be held as usual on Saturday, Oct 3 at

2. About the Collateral Repair Project:

Sasha Crow, a 60 year-old grandmother who joined 400 volunteers from 34 countries in Baghdad in 2003, in a last ditch effort to stop George Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq, began the Collateral Repair Project soon after her return to the United States, using a battered laptop in a rented room in Seattle.

CRP took life in 2005 as a grassroots person-to-person endeavor to counter the collateral damage the U.S. government has inflicted upon the citizens of Iraq in our name.
One day in the fall of 2005, Sasha spotted an item on the Internet about the family of an Iraqi ambulance driver who had been strafed and killed by U.S. aircraft while trying to rescue victims during a U.S. military operation in western Anbar province of Iraq and together with Mary Madsen, a peace worker in southern Oregon, the two somehow raised $5K to buy the driver's widow and five kids a new home and some livestock as a means of providing them with some basic security. That was how CRP began.

When sectarian strife flared after the Golden Dome bombing in Samara in 2006, Sasha and Mary began tracking Iraqi refugees forced from their war-torn country into Syria and Jordan.

By the next year, they began ferrying back and forth between the United States and Amman - where Sasha has settled - providing direct emergency assistance and Micro-Projects for Iraqi families whose reception in Jordan was not unlike the treatment Mexican undocumented workers receive in the U.S.

Over the past two years, Sasha and Mary have advocated for Iraqi refugees before international relief organizations. Collateral Repair Project has provided food baskets for impoverished refugee families, portable heaters and winter coats (it snows in Amman) and supplies for school children.

CRP has granted dozens of Micro-Projects (tools, equipment and supplies for cottage industry) – such as: sewing machines, bread ovens, laptops with printers, and construction tools to Iraqi refugees so they can earn a living in a hostile economic environment. The list is a lengthy one (for a list of projects see www.collateralrepai rproject. org)

Every day Sasha walks the hills of Amman visiting refugee families and recording their stories. But as the carnage in Iraq fades from memory and the world economy has plummeted into despair, CRP's cupboard has gone achingly bare. It is a syndrome that many grassroots peace organizations are confronting today.

Sasha Crow and Mary Madsen are unsung heroes of the movement for world peace. Their quiet, insistently determined work is emblematic of the debt that we as Americans owe to the people of lands that U.S. weapons and hubris has destroyed.

As Global Exchange founder Medea Benjamin has written, the Collateral Repair Project represents "the soul of America."

Former Christian Peacemaker Teams leader Gene Stoltzfus to give Seattle Mennonite Church Peace Lecture October 10

The founding director of Christian Peacemaker Teams, Gene Stoltzfus will give a Peace Lecture at Seattle Mennonite Church at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.

The title of Gene’s lecture is “The Conscience of a Peacemaker.” He will speak about the power of conscientious decision making and how important it is for all of us as we move from the narrow understanding of C Os (conscientious objectors). He has found the term C O to be a universal term and has discovered how it is lived out around the world.

He will also speak from his personal peacemaking experience in Iraq and Pakistan and leading a Holy Week witness at Creech Air Force Base near Las Vegas. Creech is a center for robotics warfare where drones are launched from underground computer consuls to bomb targets in Pakistan and Afghanistan killing many civilians.

Gene retired after nearly two decades as director of CPT, but remains an active peacemaker and political analyst. Last Spring Gene was in Pakistan to listen to Pakistani peacemakers share their vision for peace. Gene’s peace lecture will draw on his CPT experience, his current analysis of Pakistan and Afghanistan, US led global militarism, and the state of Mennonite peacemaking for the 21st century. 156. UNITED JUSTICE FILM FESTIVAL in Seattle early November

Miles Stanberry, a 16 year old Justice Works! volunteer and aspiring filmmaker, came up with the idea to hold a film festival as a fundraiser for our 3-Strikes Campaign. Now, he is leading this project. We encourage all of Justice Works! friends to support this impressive young man. Miles is holding the Justice Is No Game sign below at the recent Rainier Valley Parade.


The film festival will be held at the Columbia City Cinema every day for two weeks starting November 28th. To make it affordable for all, the ticket price will only be $2 plus a donation for those who are able to pay more. There will be daily showings of a series of films at 3:30pm, 6:30pm and 9pm. A 10 minute “short” of the 3-Strikes film can be viewed at www.justiceisnogame.org. On opening day there will be a silent auction too!


There are a lot of ways you can support him; plan to attend the film festival or lend a hand to help out.

The 2009 State of Washington Voter's Pamphlet contains ERRONEOUS INFORMATION. It reads:

"If you have been convicted of a felony in Washington, another state, or in federal court, you lose your right to vote in Washington State until you are released from Department of Corrections supervision."

This is a serious error. People convicted in a federal court and those convicted in another state are eligible to vote as soon as they are released from prison. Short trainings on putting organizer skills to work in building the 3-Strikes campaign are given each Friday at Justice Works! weekly meeting (6:30PM 5101 Rainier Ave. S. #106, Seattle). Topics range from factual background on the law to tips on interacting with the public or legislators.

"Here in King County we have begun to invest millions of dollars into programs that get dramatically at some of the problems that lead folks to ending up in King County jail for low-level criminal offenses. Such as drug court....

"...Let me give you an example. In the year 2000, we had a study done in King County that found we would have by 2008 an estimated 3,600/ 3,500 folks in the King County jail, necessitating the building of a third jail."

"When this study was done, in 2000, that was only 3 years after we had built what is called the Maleng Regional Justice Center..."

"...and we were told that we had to build another one in another five years. And we said we don’t have the money."

"So I pushed new initiatives – along with support from a lot of other elected officials and community supporters and we invested several million. We cut the jail budget and we invested several million into alternatives to incarceration and we found that, by giving people hope and opportunity and treatment they stayed out of jail.
"So, today as I speak to you, in September of 2009, there’s only 2,223 people in the King County Jail today when we had been told that there would be more than 3,600 by 2009. And that’s because we made practical adjustments on programs based on Best Practices that have generated huge success rates for us – thousands of people kept out of jail by getting treatment, by going on work crews and work release instead of jail.

This is a rare chance to hear from and talk with one of the most innovative people working with social networks we (Bill Aal and Viki Sonntag) know.


June comes from Athens Ohio and has a long history of helping cooperative ventures get started in Appalachia - since the 1970's. Over the years, she has worked with social networks and their analysis, long before there were computer social networks. She calls her-self a network weaver and has been working with a wide range of folks from local food groups to major health and social service networks. She will present on some new thinking on her part including rhizomic organizing, communities of practice and creativity in social networks. She and Bill met recently when I was in Athens and talked a lot about how to step up a holonic notch (Margo Adair's term) and SLOW ORGANIZING, ways in which we can develop deep relationships, get stuff done and be effective. Fits right in with the directions Jon Ramer, Sheri Herndon and the rest of us are going. Hope you all can come.

165. Seattle 11/4: Iraq and Afghanistan--what have we done?

This coming Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 7 PM, Phinney Neighbors for Peace & Justice will present our final forum of the fall series. Titled IRAQ & AFGHANISTAN: WHAT HAVE WE DONE?, it will be a discussion in which you may share your thoughts & feelings about the past eight years of war & occupation, and what we can do on a local level to increase awareness that these wars are ongoing, and build an informed constituency to confront our elected leaders.

The discussion will be led by Reverend Rich Lang, Pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, who has spoken out consistently in opposition to these wars, and who will also give us the benefit of his perspective and concerns.

Please note our new location: Woodland Park United Methodist Church, 78th & Greenwood. There is some limited parking in a lot off 78th St. on the east side of the church.

167. Cannabis Defense Coalition cafe work party 11/7 in Seattle

We have a work party scheduled for this Saturday from noon on to clean out our kitchen in preperation for our volunteer-run breakfasty cafe. We hope to pull out nearly every piece of equipment, paint the walls, consider whether to do something about the floor or just leave it, and put each piece of equipment back after it's been thoroughly scoured. We'd love to have your help.

168. Yes Men (comedy group) to celebrate WTO anniversary 11/30 at noon-Wetlake

The infamous Yes Men are in town to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the WTO events in Seattle. There is a rally on Monday and the Yes Men plan to be there and to do what they do. This should fun. They said to be there between 12:00 and 2:00 pm.



I recently watched their new film, “The Yes Men Fix the World” at the Northwest Film Forum. It is a fun documentary and a must see film.

170. China Blue: documentary on sweat shops

CHINA BLUE (88 min, Micha X. Peled, 2006)is a clandestinely shot documentary, telling the real story of how the clothes we buy are actually made. Like no other film before, CHINA BLUE is a powerful and poignant journey into the harsh world of sweatshop workers, something both China and the international retailers don't want us to see.

Following a pair of denim jeans from birth to sale, CHINA BLUE links the power of the U.S. consumer market to the daily lives of a Chinese factory owner and two teenaged female factory workers. Filmed both in the factory and in the workers' faraway village, this documentary provides a rare, human glimpse at China 's rapid transformation into a free market society.
