2. born and raised in NN.
It is a military town and it is a very depressing place.
We grew up calling it Newport Blues.

It is a sign of the shifting positon of the military away from the neocons.

Danville pretty shocking too.

5. Danville doesn't surprise me
Several factories have shut down there. They're voting with their wallets.

6. How did I turn out okay?
Wow, Rockingham County, doing me proud. Well, they had at least one absentee ballot from me, as I thought Virginia would be more of a swing state than my current one, Texas.

Looking at the totals in my home county, 20K for bush, 6K for Kerry, I sit here wondering: How did I grow up in Bible Belt Republican Country and still turn out normal?? :)

8. Fairfax County, a heavenly blue spot in a sea of bloody red
Fairfax County went for Kerry, at least. 53-47. Herndon voted for Kerry by about the same margin as the whole county. Two precincts in Herndon actually voted for Socas, the Democrat, for Congress. My friends from DC and Maryland always pity me for having to live in a red state, but hey, at least here in Fairfax it isn't all that bad. If only they hadn't redistricted Herndon into the damn 10th district, I could have a Democratic representative.

9. Did you catch the 11/12 Herndon Observer?
In a letter to the editor, there was a complaint that the weekly local paper covered the votes in the local precincts rather than the national results. She is calling this little publication part of the vast left wing media.
It's accusations like that that have made a lot of other media bend over backwards to accomodate the right wing agenda.
If you haven't written a letter to them lately, they might like a letter of support. I plan to reference her letter tell them that I understand that by the time the paper came out, the election results were no longer "news" and that I recognize they do not have a national correspondent as they only cover our neighborhoods and that is what I want them to continue to do. If that woman didn't know the results of the national election by Friday, I recommend she subscribe to the Washington Post or Washington Timesor turn on her television, it was covered on broadcast stations, she didn't even need to pay for cable.

The little local paper Herndon Observer has been the battleground of intense letter-writing struggles this past year, especially as the election heated up. There are some right-wing fanatics out there who behave as if possessed by demons. Anytime some view is published that does not worship their idol tyrant Bush, they freak out and spew bile at the newspaper. The Observer publishers, to their credit, are moderate with maybe a little tinge of liberal, and I get the sense they deliberately publish the craziest batshit letters they can get from right-wingers, just to have a good laugh at them.

I should write a few liberal letters to the paper myself. Good idea, Virginian!
