McDonnell doesn’t rule out running for vice president in 2012
Gov. Bob McDonnell says he plans to serve out his term as governor, but he did not rule out leaving if nominated to run for vice president.

"I don't have any plans for higher office at this point. So, my plan is to serve four years in Virginia and be governor," McDonnell said in his first radio show on WTOP in Washington.

When WTOP's Mark Plotkin asked McDonnell whether he would leave office to run for vice president, the governor did not shut the door completely.

"I am absolutely planning to serve four years," McDonnell said. "There's a lot of candidates out there for president and vice president."

As for serving out his term, McDonnell said: "I want to make Virginia the best place in America for energy and business and transportation, and it's going to take four years to do that."

The governor also ruled out a run for the U.S. Senate against Democrat Jim Webb in 2012 and said he would not accept any part-time jobs while serving his four-year term.

"I certainly will not do that -- I'm not going to be chairman of the Republican National Committee," McDonnell said.

McDonnell's predecessor, Timothy M. Kaine, accepted the part-time job of chairman of the Democratic National Committee after he was chosen by President Barack Obama.

Also during the hourlong program, McDonnell:

•Signaled that he would sign a series of gun bills if they make it to his desk. Among them are a measure to allow people with concealed-handgun permits to carry their firearms into restaurants that serve alcohol, as well as one that would repeal the one-gun-a-month law. •Said he would sign legislation raising the speed limit to 70 mph on rural interstate highways. •Said the state had spent more than $100 million on snow removal this winter, well in excess of the $80 million budgeted. But he said federal funding is likely to pay for 75 percent of the extra expense because of disaster declarations.
