Ukrop's for sale? Rumor says yes...the brothers say no

I heard this over the weekend. Seems that this isn't all that new (as a rumor-see link below). Apparently the brothers just don't see why they need to keep going and none of their kids seem all that interested in running it.

The way I heard it Harris Teeter was the buyer.

1. I thought Harris Teeter was having financial problems...

they've closed a couple of stores here in NOVA. Interesting development, as it seems that UKROPS has the business locked up in the Richmond area.

I just saw Jim Ukrop and there was no talk of it.

3. I got a letter from Ukrops.....

Apparently, Capitol One is buying them out. I wonder why they would want a small town (feels like a small town) grocery chain. Unless...they plan on going national with it.

FYI: Capitol One has all it's TVs set on Fox News.

But, I admit, I haven't kept up on this.

I don't know if I got the letter because I have a Ukrops card or because I have an account at First Market Bank. The letter asked me to take a survey. It was so long and tedious that I was tempted to stop half way through. It had questions like choices for how a debit card would look. Do you want the Ukrops logo or Ukrops and Capitol One logos side by side....stuff like that. They had about twenty choices for how you want the points system to work.

This was early in December. Maybe they were feeling people out. Maybe they got such a negative response, that they decided not to sell...I don't know. I would hate to have to boycott Ukrops, but would be tempted to it they were owned by Capitol One.

Maybe Capital One is going to handle some card aspect of Ukrop's banking. I can't imagine Capital One diversifying into the grocery business.

7. I have my car loan thru First Market Bank and I have a Ukrop's

card as well, and I don't recall ever getting any such letter. We've been shopping @ Kroger lately, so at least there's that choice. The one in Carytown (Richmond) is actually pretty nice (lots of organic stuff, etc.).
