I just got a creepy "survey call" on my CELL PHONE!!!
He got all upset when I asked who was funding this survey and when he got to a section about Kilgore, I refused to answer. Then I asked him where he got my cell phone number from and he HUNG UP!!!

Is anyone else getting these calls?
BTW my cell phone is supposed to be unlisted!
How DID they get my number?

2. Just recently cell phones are now fair game for marketers
I think that you need to block it, like a regular land phone.

But, I suppose, this kind of call would be exempt. At least with a cell phone you can tell who is calling you.

8. A real survey might be using random digit dialing, so ...
could get your cell phone even if no one could get your number.

But this doesn't sound like a legitimate survey; and push polling wouldn't waste its resources on random digit dialing.

3. I heard that they recently made cell numbers
available to telemarketers. You now have to register your cell as well as your home phone at https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx. We'll never be able to escape!!!

Celling Your Soul

Claim: An upcoming directory will soon make all cell phone numbers available to telemarketers.

Status: Multiple:
A consortium of wireless providers is planning to create a 411 (directory assistance) service for cell phone numbers: True.

You must register your cell phone with the national "Do Not Call" directory before 1 January 2005 to prevent your number from being provided to telemarketers: False.
Examples:

DON'T FORGET TO DO THIS....
Telemarketing on cell phone starts in September.

JUST A REMINDER... 31 days from today, cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS...

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the national DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years.

PASS THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS

---------------------------------------------------------------------

A directory of cell phone numbers will soon be published for all consumers to have access to. This will open the doors for solicitors to call you on your cell phones, using up the precious minutes that we pay lots of money for. The Federal Trade Commission has set up a "do not call" list. It is called a cell phone registry. To be included on the "do not call" list, you must call from the number you wish to register.

The number is 1-888-382-1222 or you can go to their website at www.donotcall.gov.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Starting Jan 1, 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made public to telemarketing firms. So this means as of Jan 1, your cell phone may start ringing off the hook with telemarketers, but unlike your home phone, most plans pay for your incoming calls. These telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and end up costing money. According to the National Do Not Call List, you have until Dec 15, 2004 to get on the national "Do Not Call List" for cell phones. You can either call 1-888-382-1222 from the cell phone that you wish to have put on the "do not call list" or you can do it online at www.donotcall.gov.

Registering only takes a minute, is in effect for 5 years. All of you will need to register before Dec 15. You may want to also do your own personal cell phones.

7. The "availability" thing going around is a hoax, as already mentioned.
Still, I registered my cell phone number along with my land lines when the Do Not Call List came online.

It couldn't hurt, ya' know? :)

5. I think it's automatic dialing machines -
- that dial numbers in sequence one right after the other. Your cell number just probably happened to be in the sequence.

6. You got it...
...I was sitting on the commuter train one evening three years ago when my phone rang, and it was a telemarketer. I was so surprised I sputtered "How did you get this number?"

I felt so stupid when I thought about it later. Autodialers don't distinguish cell phone numbers from non-cell numbers; they only did that briefly before portability, when there were certain specific area codes for cell phones only. I had a standard area code.
