Local tactics-how and what do you do to be involved in local politics?
Been fighting off a general malaise about Texas, since both our senators are Repubs. I haven't paid too much attention to state politics, didn't when Pinhead was governor, either. Now I'm ready to, and I want to get some ideas.

First off, local politics. I plan to start going to city, county, and school board meetings with a camera and filming the meetings, and then, either SHOW them at montly meetings and/or post them, if I can size them small enough, on the internet for others to watch.

I'm also thinking that even though the commission to be a deputy registrar runs out at the end of the year, I may renew it, and work on registering people before the next election and making sure their information is correct. At Democratic meeting functions, check that everyone is up to date on their info and cross check against the county list.

What else do you do on a local level to participate?

1. I'd appreciate some advice on this too.
I really want to get involved locally now, and I'm mad at myself for not doing it sooner. I'm trying to get in touch w/ my local Young Democrats chapter (haven't heard back yet, though), but other than that, I don't really know where to start.

Dallas County, any suggestions?

5. Er, Tuesday night:
Lupe Valdez to speak at Dallas County Young Democrats:

Join us for our next monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at
7:00 PM at the Elbow Room, 3010 Gaston Avenue. We meet in the back room that connects the Pizza Place and the Elbow Room. Our speaker will be Lupe Valdez, Democratic Dallas County Sheriff Elect.

We will also be joined by many of the candidates who ran for countywide offices in the recent election. Come and talk with them about their experiences as candidates, what they have learned and their plans for the future.

Of course, the results of the presidential election and the Frost-Sessions race were bitterly disappointing. But, Dallas County was a different story. Due to the combined efforts of many Democrats, we actually turned out more straight party voters than the Republicans did and our candidates won several important Dallas County races. For example, for the first time in years Democrats are sending judges to the bench in Dallas County. So, join us to thank our candidates for their Herculean efforts and celebrate our new
Democratic Dallas County.

On Wednesday Night the Citizens for Equality are having a wrap-up meeting at the CWA Hall in East Dallas, if you worked a polling place. Also planning for the future, if you are interested in election reform this would be a good place to start.

Next Wednesday at noon the League of Women Voters is having a meeting with Bruce Sherbet. Head of elections office in Dallas county. Also a good place if you are interested in election reform.

PM me if you want more info on any of those.

What part of town do you live in? we have a ladies supper club in East Dallas. Also there are several democratic clubs in the area. Just let me know, I can hook you up.

2. DFA - Democracy for America
Can anyone recommend DFA, Dean's organization? I've been thinking about going to a local meetup and checking it out.

3. I'll recommend it
I'm a member of Democracy for Texas in Austin and believe me we did a lot of work on the local campaigns---and we won most of them.

One of DFA's goals is to get get people to run for local offices and serve on boards and commissions. I recommend you go to a meetup or two.

6. I'll recommend it!
I went to a few meetings after Dean dropped out (I was hardcore for Dean during the primaries and even started my own meetup out in Rockwall), but it was harder for us to do the DFA thing since we live out in the boonies and only have 1 car, and the meetups were usually aways away.

It really gets you pumped up to figure out how best to direct your energies and figure out things you can do locally and nationwide to help.

8. I'm Dem County chair
in Coleman County--in the heart of * country. I would suggest that you first go here: http://www.txdemocrats.org/ click on "Get Involved" right under the banner then click on "Find your county party leadership", pick up the phone and call and ask what you can do and then go do it.
