Washington Post says Texas governor race a toss-up
http://blogs.chron.com/texaspolitics/archives/2010/07/washington_post_1.html

If perception is reality, then former Houston Mayor Bill White is getting a good dose today.

The Washington Post political scribes have moved Texas from the lean-Republican to toss-up category in the governor's race.

Texas (Move from Lean Republican to Toss Up): Former Houston Mayor Bill White (D) has more money in the bank than Gov. Rick Perry (R) and polling shows the contest close. It's still Texas in a good Republican year, which should help Perry, but White is running an effective campaign to capitalize on discontent directed at the incumbent.

From a White newsrelease release:

CASH FOR APPOINTMENTS -- Timeline for Colleen McHugh
July 2001

Perry appoints Colleen McHugh as Director of the Public Safety Commission.

December 2001

Colleen McHugh helps Perry get a tax break worth thousands of dollars by lowering Perry's land value by $100,000. Perry never paid her for legal services. When confronted about this non-reported gift, Perry's spokesperson claimed the work was part of a previous service. No proof of payment for either set of services has been released to the media.

October 2005

Perry appoints Colleen McHugh to the University of Texas System Board of Regents.

CASH FOR FAVORS -- Timeline for Doug Jaffe

September 2000 - February 2001

Through an intermediary, Rick Perry buys a piece of resort property valued at $450,000 from Doug Jaffe. Perry paid about $300,000, which was $150,000 below market value.

June 2006

The governor's office announces a $2.5 million grant for Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corp., in which Doug Jaffe is a founding investor.

March 2007

Rick Perry sells his resort property to Doug Jaffe's business partner for $1.15 million. The property was valued at only $800,000, meaning his sales price was $350,000 over and above the land's value.

CASH FOR APPOINTMENTS -- Timeline for Ron Mitchell

March 2007

Ron Mitchell helps Perry find a buyer for his resort property, netting Perry his biggest reported real estate profit ever of $823,000. Mitchell finds a buyer and negotiates a price, even though the house is not even publicly on the market. Mitchell gives Perry a free ride on the typical 6% sellers commission, which would have cost Perry approximately $70,000. Mitchell admitted to the Dallas Morning News that this giveaway wouldn't have happened in any of his other transactions. Perry never reported the gift.

February 2009

Perry appoints Ron Mitchell to the Texas State University System Board of Regents.

3. Sounds Good, Especially Considering How the WaPo Has Been
Sounds good, especially considering how the Washington Post has been bending over backwards in their efforts to dodge right-wing allegations of "liberal bias."

I'd like to see Rickie's flirtation with the Tea Party ending like Alice's tea party with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare and Perry's run at the GOP presidential nomination fading away like the Cheshire Cat.

7. Perry doesn't think he has to campaign in person anymore
He is so arrogant he thinks he's got it in the bag.

He only shows up to fundraisers to haul in cash from his owners.

Ricky, Chicky, Chicky won't debate Bill White to make his case before the people of Texas - because he doesn't think he has to.

The people of Texas should show Rick "Chicken" Perry the door.
