Question For Houston DUers
This is a copy of George Bush's Military pay records for 1972, the "AWOL period". On page 4 of these records it shows that George's address was 2910 Westheimer, Houston TX, smack-dab in the middle of River Oaks. The address is now an Eckerd Drugstore.

There's a theory going around in the Campaign 2004 forum that the reason nobody saw Dubya in Alabama is because he was actually back in Houston. That's why nobody saw him in Alabama.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=676114&mesg_id=676114

In the book Fortunate Son: George W. Bush and the Making of an American President author J.H. Hatfield charges that President Bush was arrested in 1972 for cocaine possession and that Bush’s father George Sr. used his political connections to have his son’s record expunged.

If the story of the arrest is true, then it is possible that the arrest occurred in Houston, possibly near River Oaks.

So here is my question:

Would it be possible to research the 1972 police blotters for the precincts near River Oaks to see if there's an arrest record for one George W. Bush? These records are supposed to be public, so they may be available from the precinct station directly or through a local library. Another alternative would be to search the scandal sheets of the local newspapers on microfilm.

Just a thought.

4. They're There, They Just Don't Wear It On Their Shoulder
Houston went for Gore in 2000, even tough Texas went to Bush.

If I was still living in Houston, I'd be headed to Galveston right about now. The public beaches close around 4:00PM, which means I could park for free.

Nothing like being able to jump into the surf from April to October.

6. We're here Jedicord!
I'm in Houston, and meeting more D's every day.

Funny thing is though, I moved here from Red Sox nation not too long ago.

Please keep us Texans posted on your adventures in '72 microfilms.

7. There are a good number of Houston democrats
Gore did carry Harris County in 2000. I have probably seen more Kerry/Edwards bumperstickers than I have seen Bush/Cheney stickers.

I doubt that the police records will be that easy to access. It is a nice thought and someone should do this.

10. Houston Post May Be A Better Source
It was more of a scandal sheet than the Chronicle. Both should be available in microfilm at the Houston Public Library Downtown.

Good Luck!

11. UH/CLC Has The Chronicle on Microfilm
I checked around and found that the Houston Chronicle on-line archives only go back to 1985 and we need to search 1972. The Boston Public Library does not have the Chronicle on microfilm (so much for pitching in from up here). But the University of Houston Clear Lake Campus does have the Chronicle and the Post.
