How the TDP chair election will come down.
Correct me if I am wrong please.........

During the senate caucus we will elect a person for the nominations committee.
This committee will meet on saturday to make recommendations for party leaders.
They will vote to nominated Richie.

On Saturday this nomination will be brought to the floor. (I wouldn't be surprised if the words "unanimously", or "with pride" or "with "smiles on our faces" as they nominate Richie are said)

Nominations from the floor will be taken for Charlie and Glen.

A vote will be taken.

Now on Friday after we elect someone for the nominations committee, we will vote for the TDP chair.

(Someone fill me in on this. I have no idea why this is being done, and my leadership WILL not tell us why either.)

1. Where and when did you here this?
Because this is not what Glen Maxey told us in the thread where we discussed this, what was it, two days ago? He was very specific. He did say there were a lot of discussions going on behind the scenes to make things go more smoothly, so maybe that is where some of this is coming from. But, he was very specicific that we vote on Saturday. And, that's also where he explained to us about the proportional votes.

2. Maxey speaks from Maxey's perspective

It will play out pretty much as you say, but I would say without the accolades. Boyd's people will vote to block Charlie and Glen from coming out of the nominations committee. Richie's people have already made that known. And there could be some last minute deals involving Charlie and/or Maxey as negotiations are still ongoing behind the scenes. Richie's people seem to be very intent on making sure things go smoothly and that neither Charlie or Maxey and their people feel anyone is getting screwed. Richie's people have gone out of their way. For example, when arrangements were made for Richie's area to campaign from at the convention center, Richie's people made sure Charlie also had a place as apparently he didn't know to ask for it. So Richie's people did it for Charlie.

Keep in mind that if Charlie or Glen can muster 20% of the vote in the nominations committee, they have the right to bring a "minority report" to the floor for consideration. Nominations can also come from the floor after the nominations committee report is read but before it is voted on.

For more complete information on what will happen, check out the Texas Democratic Party Rules starting on page 15.

I had a call last night from someone saying that Richie's people were going to try to "play with the rules" at the convention. I don't see how anyone can "play with the rules" as the rules are already established. Only the SDEC can change the rules between conventions and the SDEC won't meet again until the convention and they will not make any changes then. What could happen is the chair could rule any nominations from the floor out of order per Roberts Rules of Order. In that case, someone from the floor would have to "challenge the chair" and a majority vote would overrule the chair and allow the nomination. If the chair prevails, Richie is elected and its over. However, I don't think the chair would do that and risk alienating Charlie and Glen's people. But if Richie's people don't think they have to votes to win without a runoff, they will do it.

Probably the number one thing people going to this convention do not do is read the rules. Everyone should read these rules and know these rules. Its all very simple and straightforward.

In any event, it already appears Richie has the votes to win without a runoff.

As for me, I'm real tempted right now to just take a walk from the whole thing and stay home. I get completely disgusted with long drawn out knock down drag out roll call vote floor fights. It does nothing but tear the party up. I've seen it happen way too many times.

3. It sounds like to answer John's question, though
everyone is saying the same thing in terms of how the nominations happen and the order of that, Friday to Saturday. And, it sounds like he's right that Glen and Charlie's nominations will have to come from the floor since they most likely won't come from the nominations committee.

But, it does seem clear, to me at this point anyway, that we vote for chair on Saturday.

The thing I dread, like gman, is some sort of long-drawn out bitter floor process on Saturday. We don't need that. I'm so focused on what we have to do between now and November and I just want some synergy on how we are going to get organized to do that work.

I'm going to be sure my treo is charged up so I can surf the internet.

4. Gman-
What polling do you have? Because the line "In any event, it already appears Richie has the votes to win without a runoff..."

I assume youre looking at the nominations committee? Because the statewide floor is chock full of Maxey support.

5. To the contrary,
the upcoming wide open democratic Convention contest over the chairmanship is one of the best things that could happen to the Texas Democratic Party.

8. I agree
I think it's great that we have such interest, and such great candidates, in the TDP chair race. Boyd, Glen, and Charlie are all good people and good Democrats. I'd be happy with any one of them. And I know that all three of them will be working their hearts out for the party in November.

6. If Richie's people resort to parliamentary sleight of hand
To prevent a real vote on the party chair being taken, I will consider it my duty to walk out of the convention and meet with other members of the Democratic Wing of the Texas Democratic Party to continue building a party that will someday win elections again.
