Buses from TX metro-cities to Crawford on Saturday 8/27

I'm helping Debbie Russell get the word out. They are arranging for charter buses and need to determine a need for them, and good pick up & park locations. I think the Austin one is covered but if you live in Houston, S.A. or D/FT they need your advice & help.

We need help putting this out widely AND letting people know that charter buses from Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth (or one in between?) are being arranged: please help us identify good convergence spots in those cities (large parking lot for people to park their car safely for the full day/close to city bus lines for those without cars/centrally located or on the side of town that is closest to Crawford) and we need help with mobilizing people to fill the buses, or possibly take RSVPs to see if we have enough buses on order for people interested.

These buses usually leave around 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. to Crawford depending on how long the trip is from your city. They plan to be there for the noon rally. Once the rally is over and you have gotten your lunch, you get back on the bus and go back to your cities and parking lots.

Send your e-mails to Debbie. If you want a bus in your city you need to show the demand. The ride is probably going to be $10-$15 for the charter per person. That's a lot cheaper than gas.

Bus leave out: 7 a.m. from the parking lot on Palm St. between Fannin and Main (across from the Mann Eye Clinic and just north on Fannin from the First Unitarian Church, the hosts of our convergence location: map link here: http://www.firstuu.org/ -the church is 2 blocks south of the parking lot). This bus will carry 47 people comfortably and has undercarriage luggage compartments/a second bus will be on standby for overflow. Returning no later than 10:30 pm.

Houston at 10:30? Usually the good stuff starts right when we would be leaving if it's the latter.

If you can find a ride back some other time, and want off the bus, you can do that. Just make sure the person in charge on your bus knows you have chosen to stay. You can camp if you want and find another way home.

The buses have places for storage underneath so you can bring your gear.

The buses will either drive all the way to CCII or park and we'll be shuttled in. I think that the buses will more than likely drop us off at CCII.

A point person will be responsible for each bus. A lot of this is still being worked out, but bring some cash or a check made out to Gold Star Families for Peace to help defray the costs of the buses which GSFP is paying for, if you can afford it. No one will be denied a seat, if you can't afford it.

that's what a tank of gas would have cost me and that's about all I can spare. Is that enough?

I thought it best to ride the bus if possible to cut down on the amount of cars needing to park.

Busses are currently being coordinated from:
Austin, Houston, Dallas and San Antonio (Fort Worth is a possibility - TBA)

For SATURDAY, Aug. 27, to try to help alleviate traffic problems in Crawford. Buses will leave out early Sat. morning returning late Sat. night.

RSVP: No need (except for San Antonio)...just show up and bring friends! Arrangements are in the works for back up busses (except for SA) in case more than one bus becomes necessary. Also, the sites are acting as carpool convergence sites as well, so that if the bus fills up, people with large cars can offer to drive a car or van load and perhaps use their vans/SUVs as shuttles once in Crawford! (check in at Peace House if so).

FEE/DONATIONS: The busses are being funded by donations through Gold Star Families for Peace specifically for this purpose. No fee is required, but donations are greatly appreciated and will go directly to Gold Star Families for Peace (to be collected by a point person en route who will turn over to a designated point person upon arrival). TIPS for the drivers are greatly encouraged!

Can someone confirm that there is a bus leaving from Dallas from the Westmoreland station at 8:30 a.m. and returning no later than 8:30 p.m.? I have to catch a train at Plano at 6:45 a.m. to make it to that station on time, and just want to make sure! Is anyone else here going on that bus from Dallas? Thanks! Diane

I live in SE Houston near Beltway 8. If I drive, I need directions from 288 to the address on Fannin. How are you getting there? Also, is everyone making signs, etc., or are there more than enough?
I had another thought; when we travel overseas, where it's REALLY HOT, restaurants give out chilled face cloths to wrap around your neck and cool down your face. I may just go buy a dozen for that purpose.

26. Babs, we're going to drive

I found out that the buses are school-bus style with no a/c.

Here's directions, though:

Travel 288 to Loop 610 west, immediately exiting at Fannin and traveling north through the Med Center and past Hermann Park; that's where you'll continue north on San Jacinto (it's one way north and Fannin is one way south; don't worry, just follow the road as it splits) and on through the Museum District. The First Unitarian Universalist Church is at 5200 Fannin at Southmore, so watch for the block numbers and for Southmore and then turn left (west) toward the church. You can't miss it.

Here's a map. My directions are easier than going 59 because of the construction and resulting traffic.

Those rags are an excellent idea; Ann Wright suggested something exactly like that.

Camp coordinator Ann Wright said, “The area at Camp Casey II has no camping space left. There is limited space at site I. Those newcomers wishing to camp may have to camp in town or somewhere else.”

Wright also said, “Those coming for the activities this weekend, bring your own spray misters or perhaps a wet kerchief—anything you need to help with the heat. The crush of people expected should bring plenty of water. Also, because of the heat, pets should be left at home if possible, due to the heat. Please be watchful of the children and the elderly, as they are more susceptible to the heat.”

Cold quartered oranges are a great way to beat the heat; I bought them for the crew that re-roofed our house in the heat and they scarfed them down!
