A Conversation with Tariq Ali and Laura Flanders
Two of the sharpest progressive writers and critics -- Tariq Ali and
Laura Flanders -- will come together for a conversation to examine
political trends in the United States and the world.
Tariq Ali, an author, filmmaker, and historian, was educated in
Pakistan and then came to Oxford as a teenager in the 1960s, where his
activism against the U.S. war in Vietnam -- organizing marches on U.S.
embassies and debating figures such as Henry Kissinger -- earned him a
reputation as an effective voice against empire. The longstanding
editor of New Left Review, Tariq Ali's most recent book is "Bush in
Babylon: The Recolonization of Iraq". His book "Street Fighting Years:
An Autobiography of the 60's" has also just been re-issued.
Laura Flanders, the sharp-witted host and interviewer on Air America
Radio and KALW in San Francisco, also writes regularly for
Tompaine.com, The Nation, Ms. Magazine and Znet. Her most recent book
is "Bushwomen: Tales of a Cynical Species", an investigation into the
women in George W. Bush's Cabinet. Publisher's Weekly called the
best-seller "fierce, funny and intelligent." Flanders is the founding
director of the Women's Desk at the media watch group FAIR, and the
former producer and host of CounterSpin, FAIR's nationally-syndicated
radio program.
