Hoeffel’s odds against Specter a big question for Democrats
By Shweta Govindarajan

Democratic donors are split over Rep. Joe Hoeffel’s prospects against Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), who narrowly won his party’s nomination last month.

Some donors point out that Specter, in his fourth term, has all the advantages of incumbency — mountains of campaign cash, high name recognition and the power to steer federal dollars to high-priority projects across the Keystone State. And on top of that, they say, the senator’s politics aren’t all that distasteful to middle-of-the-road Democrats.

“Arlen Specter is certainly not the worst Republican to come down the pike,” said Linda Benson of Wynnewood, Pa., who, with her husband, Bill, has given $4,000 to the Hoeffel campaign. “I’m not totally optimistic. Specter is very popular in the state.”

The Sierra Club’s Joe Fox said: “There’s no question that is hard to beat.”

2. I'm glad the choice is between Specter and Hoeffel
that's much more palatable than Hoeffel vs. Toomey. Toomey is just scary. He's not just far right, he's far out!

My friends have been using that to describe our local reactionary: "he's not far right, he's far out!"

10. Can't quite put my finger on it but,
I don't trust him. He has done some good things in Congress but I think he left some very hot issues in his home district unchallenged. He also dresses like an FBI agent - but that's my age showing!:hippie:

11. Please expand your comments.
I know very little of Hoeffel being from the North Eastern part of the state and I'm very interested in your opinion, Wolftone. What kind of issues are you talking about?

8. Join Joe's Yahoo! group
Joe Hoeffel ("Huffle") has been fighting for Pennsylvania’s families for over 25 years. First elected to Congress in 1998, he’s earned a reputation as a hardworking moderate legislator, a deficit hawk on the budget and a strong advocate of expanded healthcare coverage.

This group is for state-wide supporters of Congressman Joe Hoeffel's campaign to take back the US Senate in 2004
