1 dead in Oklahoma City mall shooting
1 dead in Oklahoma City mall shooting

By KEN MILLER, Associated Press Writer 32 minutes ago

A young man opened fire in a busy mall Saturday, injuring a teen before the man was shot and killed by an off-duty sheriff's deputy, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. near the entrance to a department store, said Oklahoma County sheriff's spokesman Mark Myers. The motive for the shooting was not known and there were no other injuries, he said.

The deputy, who was working as a security guard at the Crossroads Mall, was taking a break when "he heard a commotion downstairs, kind of like a couple of guys fighting, then he heard a gunshot," Myers said.

Man shot, killed by deputy at mall

By J Wertz
The Oklahoman

An Oklahoma County sheriffs deputy fatally shot a gunman who shot and wounded a 15-year-old boy inside a southeast Oklahoma City mall Saturday, authorities said.

No names were released Saturday night. Paramedics said the dead shooter appeared to be about the same age as the wounded teen.

About 6:30 p.m., witnesses told The Oklahoman, an argument broke out near the mall arcade and escalated into a brawl that resulted in gunfire.

I was on the upper balcony and saw a huge crowd of young people fighting, said Paul Heath, an Oklahoma City bombing survivor who was on his way to see a movie with his wife. It was amazing how fast police were at the scene.

An Oklahoma County sheriffs deputy, one of two stationed at the mall, was on his dinner break when he heard a scuffle and a gunshot, Sheriff John Whetsel said.

The deputy investigated and saw an armed male shoot someone near the J.C. Penney store, Whetsel said. When the deputy identified himself as a law officer, the shooter turned toward him with the gun still in his hand.

The deputy fired one shot, killing the shooter, Whetsel said.
