Do you think Dewine felt the heat of the election and compromised?
By 18 months from now, the Ohio electorate has got to become fed up with our pathetic state of affairs and want to take it out on...someone. They took a pass and let old Voinovich get elected and gave the boy king a narrow victory last November. Do you think Dewine is fearful of being the object of their rising wrath? To his credit, he did vote against drilling the Alaska refuge, but on the balance he has about nothing to show for his 10 years in Washington. Do you think he joined this Senate-compromise-group to act moderate so he does not get the boot in 2006?

(This question is directed at Ohio members)

1. DeWine didn't compromise on a damned thing.
Frist pointed a gun at the Democrats and DeWine was one of fourteen assistants that collected their wallets, watches, and rings ... and left 'em standing there in their underwear without firing a shot. The Democrats agreed not to call the police. That's not a compromise. That's surrender and capitulation by the Quisling Democrats.

2. What difference does it make if Ohio is mad?
They only let the Republicans vote.

5. No
Judging by my angry Republican co-workers today, DeWine did himself no favors with his base.

I've always despised DeWine. He's the worst possible combination: an anti-gun-rights Republican. (Ick!) So I've been egging the Repubs on today, reminding them how he also co-sponsored the renewal of the assault weapons ban last year. :)

6. I'm no fan of DeWine
But I am glad to see that our 2 Senators are making headlines. I'm glad that DeWine worked toward a compromise and that the moderates are not simply giving a wink and a nod to EVERY G-D thing that Bush, Frist & Co. propose. Maybe the moderates are starting to take their job seriously as elected officials for their constituents and not just "yes men & women" for the radical right. Think about the alternative - the radical right keeps them in "party line" and continues their aggressive, spit-in-your-face, anti-American, theocratic agenda.

IMO - if he were thinking about re-election, he wouldn't have compromised. He is the incumbent and chances are that as long as the R base is happy and he is unopposed in the primaries, his chances are great for re-election.

11. I agree
At least the compromise gives the Dems a chance to filibuster a supreme court nominee down the road.

And Voinavich's passionate speech about the Bolton nomination is the first time I've ever been proud to have him as my senator.
