Ohio adds 5,500 jobs; still second worst job losses in the nation, 2004

Ohio’s economy added 5,500 jobs last month but still has the secondworst job losses in the nation during the past year, according to the final state jobs report before the election.

With the economy — and Ohio — poised to play a key role in the presidential election, Republicans pointed to the new jobs and a net increase since December as a sign the economy is improving.

Despite last month’s gains, Ohio has lost 17,900 jobs during the past 12 months, including 11,400 manufacturing jobs. In fact, Ohio is one of only three states with a net job loss during that period. Only Michigan lost more jobs, at 52,500.

The Ohio unemployment rate dropped to a seasonally adjusted rate of 6 percent in September from 6.3 percent in August, based on a separate survey of households.
