Talking back: CBS to take on WBT
WBCN will drop sports simulcast for a conservative-talk format that brings nationally syndicated shows.

CBS Radio will announce today it plans to challenge talk radio giant WBT-AM (1110) by flipping one of its Charlotte stations to a conservative-talk format featuring personalities like Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and former WBT host Jason Lewis.

Beginning Sept. 14, WBCN-AM (1660) will stop simulcasting sports programming from sister station WFNZ-AM (610) and launch a talk schedule, calling itself “America's Talk.”

“We feel that Charlotte has never really had an alternative when it comes to news talk,” said D.J. Stout, operations manager for WBCN.

2. The graveyard is full...
of stations in this market who try to compete directly with WBT and have failed, 960 AM, 1220 AM, 1270 AM, 1600 AM, 98.7 FM, and that's just for starters. WBCN is just a placeholder for a Boston station. If CBS wanted to compete, they would do something different, like LibTalk. Or the last 2 hours of the Stephanie Miller show on 107.9 theLink, after Bob and Sheri.

4. WBT provides enough wingnut lunacy without another station to add to it..
