West Point Tyson plant closes mere hours after announcement
WEST POINT, Neb. -- After years of rumors in the West Point area about whether the Tyson Foods beef slaughter plant would be scaled back or closed, residents got the news big and bold Wednesday morning.

...
Not all 365 jobs are held by people in West Point -- the towns of Beemer, Snyder, Scribner, Pender, Wisner and Oakland will be among those affected. As West Point Public Schools superintendent Ted DeTurk said, "This is going to effect Northeast Nebraska from Norfolk as far east as Tekamah, and it is going to go south, because I know there's some people who work for Tyson that live in Fremont."

...
Any bubbly thoughts Wednesday were popped, in the mindframe of Ridling.

"Jobs are hard to find," she said. "You can't pay for your house if you don't have a job. ... I am thinking food pantry or food stamps for the people who work there. What else is there?"
