What is she waiting for?!

Klobuchar missing from DOMA repeal bill

Sen. Amy Klobuchar is one of only two Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee who have not signed on to a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, and that committee is only two votes away from passing the bill out of committee. Klobuchar and Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl are seen as the two key votes on the committee and both have said they havent decided which way they will vote when the bill is taken up in the coming weeks.

The bill would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1995 bill signed by President Clinton which bans the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. In February, President Obama and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder evaluated the law, found it likely to be unconstitutional and decided not to defend the law in court challenges. And last Wednesday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California introduced a bill to repeal the law.

Minnesotas Sen. Al Franken, who also sits on the 18-member judiciary committee, is a sponsor of the bill. In order to pass the committee, the bill needs 10 votes, and eight senators on that committee are already sponsors. Eight other members of the committee are Republicans not likely to vote for the bill. That leaves two votes unaccounted for, those of Klobuchar and Kohl.

1. Klobuchar's office says she doesn't announce her position on a vote until the vote
He said she hasn't made up her mind yet on which way she's going to vote. Made no commitment beyond that. I reminded him that Sen. Paul Wellstone said there was one vote he regretted ever making: to support the Defense of Marriage Act. Maybe others should remind her as well.

2. She doesn't announce her position on a vote until the vote because she's hoping
a) by then she'll know which way the wind is blowing

b) odds are the local media won't cover the vote and the only people who may notice what she does are the few who are paying attention

c) maybe she'll get the flu or something and be able to avoid voting at all

3. Good Wellstone response!
Thanks for calling. She probably will vote for the repeal, but it's like dflprincess wrote...let's see who's for/against first.

They always sound programmed in her office (even face to face)...noncommittal programming.

4. Amy staffer told MN Sen. Scott Dibble she's voting for repeal

Guess the calls and emails worked. At least for the staff!
