It's December, and you know what that means: Planning the DU Holiday Party
For those of you who are new to the MN Forum, for the past few years, we have had a dinner gathering some time between Christmas and New Year's.

This year, Christmas Day falls on a Friday. so Saturday the 26th would be the earliest date.

The floor is now open for discussion.

1. The 26th is good.
It's Boxing Day and, as the servants will be off, I'll be planning to go out to eat. (Yes, I'm delusional.)

We've used Fongs in the past for the holdiay gathering - but that isn't engraved in stone either. It's not in the best location for anyone using mass transit, but it has a wonderful parking lot.

Any other suggestions for time and place?

3. Works for me as well
Actually I'm pretty open the from the 26th through Jan 3. So I'll just sit back and see what kind of consensus we arrive at.

And let's be clear, everyone is welcome.

4. Yes, we've even had people from other states come to our parties
Sunday night would work for me as well. Monday and Wednesday not at all.

5. Any more input?
Edited on Thu Dec-03-09 05:17 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
I'll throw out a suggestion:

Sunday, December 27 for dinner.

I'll leave the place open for now, but if Spike decides to come (and I don't know if she will), then David Fong's has to be the most vegetarian-unfriendly Chinese restaurant in the world. Every single dish has either meat or seafood in it, and I do mean every single dish.

The veggie friendly alternative would be Roat Osha, a Thai restaurant that some of us have been to and which has 1) a parking lot and 2) vegan alternatives.

6. Woo-hoo!
A gathering. A holiday gathering. The 26th is better, but I can do the 27th.

8. I would like to try to come
How about Liffey or the Local? I will go with the consensus, though.

9. The Local would be good, and its cuisine would be more acceptable to more people
and we could reserve the room we had when Jason didn't show up. :-)

How is it for parking? (I'd just take the bus.)

10. Downtown on a Sunday, it shouldn't be too hard to find parking
and it's not that long a walk down the Mall from the train (about 5 or 6 blocks though I think you can use the bus after you get off the train, just have your ticket ready to show the driver). I imagine from a mass transit perspective, it's easier for a lot of people.

Do we want to try to do it a little earlier than dinner? Maybe about 3?

11. That may work for some people--personally
I'm part of a weekly brunch group that usually doesn't finish till 2:00, but if an earlier time works for other people, fine.

It might make more sense to have it during a meal time, though, when people are going to be eating anyway.

15. I'd love a big ginger
(though truly it is blasephmy to mix Jameson with anything) - but if I'm driving, I don't dare.

19. I was in Minneapolis last summer and enjoyed two places
One was Nye's, what a raucous place THAT would be for DUers to meet! (I think that was the name - Polish place near a bridge, with a complete Rat Pack decor inside).

The other was the Fire Lake Grill in the Radisson. Their food was absolutely scrumptious. But perhaps a bit pricey for the gathering you had in mind.

we had a good experience at The Local, and they let us have a private room.
