Raised in Minnesota, I have a request
I was just talking with a friend who still lives in Minnesota about F/911. She was complaining about how everyone around her defends Bush. I've told her about this site, and have also found some yahoogroups for her, but I was wondering if there are any online community groups for democrats in the Twin Cities. I've notice there are a lot of college groups, but she's an older woman.

Any information would be appreciated.

signed,
miserable in Florida lol

1. I'm an "older" man....what's wrong with DU?
If she is looking for actual Dem organizations just have her go to the Dem website and put in her zip code. She can easily find "like-minded" people to interact with.

We lived in Minnesota for 8 months. My favorite bumpersticker...."I came. I thawed. I transferred."

3. lol, I didn't mean DU was for youngster only
I meant that the online groups (not DU) seem to be for College students.

2. Point her to DU, and we'll see that she hears about any future gatherings.
Where does she live in Minnesota? A southern suburb? A rural area? Faribault?

Minneapolis itself seems to be full of Kerry signs, buttons, and stickers.

To get in touch with the state party, go to

If she wants to get in touch with the more activist Democrats, she should go to

4. Thanks for the links
She lives in Apple Valley, which really surprised me when she said she seemed to only know republicans. As you can tell by my user name when I lived there I always seemed be around those "bleeding heart liberals".

5. Apple Valley is weird like that
It's kind of schizophrenic, with a wacky mix of Dems and Repubs. In college, I dated a woman from Apple Valley. Her dad was a pilot for NWA and made six figures a year, so they were pretty well off (this is in the late 80s/early 90s). Her folks were staunch Repubs, but many of the neighbors were Dems or Dem-leaners.

Of course, these days there's much more of a split in the Twin Cities: the core cities and inner-ring burbs are solid DFL, and the outer burbs are the stronghold of the GOP. It's never been as polarized here as it is now, mostly due to the rancor of the radical right-wingers who've taken over the MN GOP. Very scary.

(oh, btw, the link to the fledgling MN progressive caucus site is www.progressivecaucus.net. I'm the webmaster for the site. We have a signup page which gets you on our action alert list, and will probably start having general meetings very soon!) :D

8. Some ideas

The above will hopefully get you to a calendar that lists progressive events in the area, and probably the groups behind them with a little effort.

I think there is an active group of Code Pink in the Twin Cities, I'm not active in that, but I've read about them in the local papers sometimes.

There's Pax Christi, Twin Cities: progressive group of Catholic people, which is probably being monitored by Homeland Security. I am not kidding. ON EDIT: This group is probably being monitored much like the Peace Group in Mike Moore's movie was infiltrated. I went to some of their events, and they are good people.

Every once in a great while, a group called "Every church a peace church" meets. They are progressive people, not fanactical, religious nut jobs.

Isn't there a group "Women against military madness" up here?

Peace in the Precincts (sp?), and Merriam Neighbors for peace, are some groups that pop into my head.

Wellstone action, another
