In response to widespread exposures of recruiter improprieties, fraud, and coercion, the Army has declared a one day national hiatus for their nearly 8,000 recruiters on May 20. Counter-recruitment organizations across the country, including Youth Against War and Racism, have made the call for actions on May 20-21 to say "one day is not enough!"
While the Army explains the widespread improprieties as the result of a few bad apples, many recruiters themselves, speaking anonymously to the press, have explained the systemic nature of recruiters' manipulative, deceptive, and high pressure tactics toward young people.
At base the problem flows from the huge pressure on recruiters to meet monthly quotas amid growing public opposition to the war. Army recruiters were 42 percent behind their target in April, despite dramatically increasing staff and financial incentives.
Working class young people are increasingly unwilling to fight and die in Bush's war for oil and empire. This reality underscores the huge potential to build a powerful youth anti-war and counter-recruitment movement. A powerful movement in our schools, communities, and workplaces can force Washington to bring the troops home.
Now is the time to mobilize! Join us on May 21.
