1. I don't think people understood it correctly
No one would have pass this thing if they knew that it will take away the rights of so many people, including live in couples and widows and widowers.

2. So much for keeping young, educated people in the state.
(or America for that matter).

3. Oh, me too.
I'm always talking about how great it is to live in a blue state, and generally it is. But something like this is just so utterly, viscerally ugly, it doesn't fit with everything I've come to love about Michigan in the 10 years I've lived here. I can't bring myself to phone my gay friends yet, I'm too ashamed of this. I so desperately want to call them and apologize and offer... something, I don't know what. I hurt so bad for them. I've marched for gay rights, it's the least I can do as a straight woman. I am heartsick over the hatred, and I am frightened for my friends' future. It's impossible to imagine what's going through their minds today, having basic human rights DENIED, and the denial CODIFIED into law.

I must get to bed, I have only slept one hour. Yet I'm unable to close my eyes without seeing nightmares unfolding!
:scared:

4. People didn't understand what it really said
Most people I talked to who opposed gay marriage--were pissed when they found out that civil unions and other partnerships would be prohibited by this. Once again, lies, deceit and the general uninformed nature of the populace has been taken advantage of.

I am sickened by this.

6. My assistant was just officially declared a second class citizen
My assistant is gay and is now an offical second class citizen. He owns property with his partner, pays taxes, supports the arts and other civic causes, and is a model citizen. But now he is offically discriminated against in our state constitution, thanks to the idiots in this state. Unbelieveable.

I am just sick about the whole damn thing. Thank God I live in Ann Arbor, if I lived in a conservative community and had to endure the gloating I don't know what I would do.

7. Get in line, bif
Unfortunately, we have a lot of company as 9 other misguided states did the same thing.

It's a sad, sad day for this country.

8. So gee, what's the next new state amendment? Let me guess...
prayer in the schools? Posting of the 10 commandments? How about limits on the number of non-christian churches in a given area without a vote by citizens. Where will this end?

9. It won't until we make it end.
All of us in Michigan have to work like mad to change the balance of power in Lansing. We picked up the 52nd district yesterday but we need to do more. Grassroots efforts in every city, village, township, etc. Educate the public, get Betsy DeVos and her band of crazies OUT.

10. This country is going backwards......
There was absolutely no reason to take the rights away from people just because of their partners. Serial Killers and child molesters are able to get married, yet homosexual can't?

This is sickening.
I'm up to do what I can to help anyone with their civil rights.

11. Hi
I looked at the numbers a little. There were 580,000 more votes for Kerry than there were against this proposal (also, about 300,000 people who voted in the presidential race didn't vote yes or no for the proposal). In only two counties did a majority vote against this proposal, Ingham and Washtenaw.

I didn't really have a point, but I guess it is that a lot of people who are voting democrat didn't vote against this proposal. I think we have to really work hard to get people to understand this issue, because right-wing people have gotten it very confused. I think that most people would vote that everyone should be treated fairly if they were able to see it that way. And I think - nation-wide - that people should frame this as a freedom of religion issue. There is no argument that I have heard that opposes marriage for everyone that is not a religious basis. I think it would help for people to understand that if the government is imposing the religious views of one group on to others then it is an assault on religious freedom in this country - I think if people began to see it that way, they would think of it as anti-american.

I just think it is a shame, and it worries me that people can be so hateful and ugly, but if I think about it, I think that people aren't seeing it that way, and if this could be reframed so that people thought of it differently that would help.

Living in Ingham county I am glad that at least it didn't pass here.

13. I wonder if the SCOTUS would overturn it on a challange.

I don't know. Are there enough reasonable judges out there or are we stuck with right wing homophobes?

15. If it's any consolation...
It passed by a smaller percentage than any other state...At least according to a co-worker of mine. No link or data to back it up.
But we lost with a vote of roughly 60-40%, and in most states with similar amendments they passed with 70-30%-ish...
Which, of course, still sucks.
