George Kell has died
I met him and Al Kaline once when I worked at Domino's and my department got to sit in the President's Box. Very nice man. I loved his voice: http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090324&content_id=4058660&vkey=news_det&fext=.jsp&c_id=det

1. It's so sad
I feel sorry for any Tigers' fan who didn't get to listen to George Kell. I loved how both he and Kaline were Hall of Famers. Kell had a natural broadcaster's voice for baseball, too.

3. "He hit that ball about as hard as you can hit a ball!" In his Southern drawl.
What a great voice.

4. Kell and Harwell: The Southern Gentlemen of broadcasting.

We are fortunate to have had a chance to spend years listening to both of them.

When I lived out of state before we had the Internet--especially in Alabama in the late 70's--I would rig up antennas to catch Ernie do night games on WJR. Under the right conditions, you could get WJR pretty easily.

When I came home to visit, it was a treat to turn on the tube and hear old George and Al call the games. Anyone remember "JJ and The Morning Crew" with their "George Swell and All Foulnine" and "Another Tiger Cooldown"?
