MA State Rep Bradford Hill shifts on same-sex unions . . .

Legislator Shifts on Same-Sex Unions
Drops Support for Civil Compromise

by Sarah Schweitzer, (Boston) Globe Staff | June 25, 2005

"MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA -- The meeting with state Representative Bradford Hill in this solidly Republican town Thursday was tense. Local supporters of same-sex marriage had turned out to pounce on Hill for voting last year (at the 2004 Massachusetts Constitutional Convention) in favor of a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage but allows civil unions.

"But Hill had a surprise.

"When Chad Gifford, former chief executive of FleetBoston Financial Corp. and a resident of Manchester-by-the-Sea, asked the Republican legislator if he planned to continue supporting the amendment, Hill responded with a clear no.

" 'Congratulations,' responded Gifford, whose son is gay and married. Applause broke out in the meeting room of the columned town hall.

"With that, Hill became what appears to be the first lawmaker to publicly change positions on the same-sex marriage ban, surprising local constituents and Beacon Hill activists.

. . . snip . . .

"Marc Solomon, political director of MassEquality, praised Hill's decision. 'More than two-dozen gay and lesbian couples in Hill's district have gotten married over the past year,' he said. 'And it is terrific that Representative Hill is standing up for those couples and their families.'

"Hill, 38, of Ipswich, was elected to the Legislature in 1998. He represents the Fourth Essex District, which includes Ipswich, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Boxford, Middleton's Precinct 2, Hamilton, and Wenham."

2. Is he a Repug or a Dem?
If he's a Repug, that would be even more suprising. I'm glad he's noticed that, over a year later, the sky hasn't fallen.

I don't think the proposed amendment would pass now, if another vote was held. So I don't think it will ever get on the ballot.

but a good friend of arthur finklestein, the slime puppy homophobe helms advisor who got married to a man as soon it was legal, taking time out to launch a campaign against hillary...

finklestein used to live in ipswich.

the amendment won't pass; i have spoken with my own rep and state senator, (who supported the amnedment)- the senator will change his vote, and they know several others. it won't make it through the legislature.

Hill is to be commended, but he is also a republican in the state legislature- they tend to be actually much closer to the Richardson/Javits school than the Romney/Bush type of politician.

)(edited because i spelled my name wrong. sheesh.

4. Arthur J. Finkelstein . . . ::::spit::::

1.) http://ronslog.typepad.com/ronslog/2005/04/ (go to "Arthur J. Finkelstein")

Such hypocrisy! May Finkelstein suffer to the same extent that he has caused pain and suffering to others!

2.) After learning that gay rightwing-hack Finkelstein married his male partner in Massachusetts, Bill Clinton stated
"I thought, one of two things. Either this guy believes his party is not serious, and is totally
Machiavellian in his position, or there's some sort of self-loathing there. I was more sad for him."
referring of course to Finkelstein's decision to be Republican, not gay.
