BROCKTON —

Mayor James E. Harrington has conceded that he has lost his bid for a third term, as challenger Linda Balzotti appears to be the apparent winner and the first female mayor in Brockton's history. The mayor made a brief concession speech at about 8:35 p.m. at Joe Angelo's restaurant before supporters. "I love this city. It has been an honor to serve this city for over 20 years," Harrington told the group.

The polls in Brockton closed at 8 p.m in the 2009 city election. Supporters have been filing into candidate gatherings to await the results

Even though city officials estimated the overall turnout in today's election to be at most 30 percent, the election warden at West Jr. High school says he's expecting closer to 50 or 60 percent from precinct 1B on the city's West side.

As of 4 p.m., Warden Jim Doucette said that 436 voters had shwon up, and he's expecting a total of around 800 by the time polls close at 8 p.m. today.
