Skinny - anyone? (05-24-06)
http://www.dmcityview.com/skinny.shtml

<snip>
Polling numbers spread by the Mike Blouin campaign in order to beef up fundraising in recent weeks may have been bull, but top Democratic national pollster Paul Maslin has done his own research into the campaign to see who will face Jim Nussle in November, and the race, we're told, "is too close to call" - this after a top statehouse source told us it was all but over. Blouin supporters and other top Dems were shown data beginning last week that showed Culver in the lead by a mere 5 points, with Culver at 26 percent, Blouin at 21 percent, Ed Fallon at 13 percent and a whopping 40 percent undecided. "People are watching Blouin's attack ads and listening to what he has to say," we're told.

However, the current battle between Culver and Blouin is just a tune-up for the fight that the Democratic winner will have with the state party after the June primary. The Blouin and Culver campaigns are already grumbling - loudly and publicly - about the Iowa Democratic Party's plans for a "coordinated campaign." The coordinated campaign is supposed to identify likely Democratic supporters and increase the turnout of those voters via absentee ballot on Election Day. Unfortunately, Culver and Blouin have figured out that the state party's lackluster fundraising and underwhelming plans for driving up the Democratic vote in November could doom their chances for victory. Thus, we're told to look for a shakeup in staffing at the state party headquarters soon. CV

<end>

I refuse to post negative gossip about Culver - so, if you are in the mood to read that stuff you'll have to go to the site :P

1. You mean this about Culver?
Republicans plan on shedding new light on Democratic candidate Chet Culver's acceptance of almost $1,000 from former CIETC executive Ramona Cunningham once the primary is over, we're told. Culver has also been pimped recently by media and political types who have had fun with his creative spelling while he served as a lobbyist, including his extensive work for the "trail" lawyers.

9. Yes, I do. I saw it at college once.
It was part of some film series and then some years later it was on PBS up in Minneapolis when I lived there. Great story but yikes!!

11. I think the movie had Spencer Tracy.
He was always playing judges or senior lawyers in later life. Or is it Bad Day at Black Rock he was in (that was kind of a latter day OBI).

BD@BR - Tracy

The IMDB brought up 12 Angry Men in it's OBI review - that was also a great flick! (Has any of this gone off topic yet? ;))

Edited cuz I posted the wrong site...:blush:

3. Hopefully the Democratic Party machine is already working on
the highlights of Nussle's career. Or should I say LOWlights?

As an coastal dweller, I wonder how much of an impact the Cunningham thing is going to make on voters out here. Hell, the DMRegister stopped making deliveries out here over a decade ago & I don't think the local paper has carried it, so only those that keep up with politics will have a clue. I would hope Nussle's connections to Bush, chairing the House Budget Committee, etc would have more bite.

8. How bad is $800.00 from Cunningham compared to
$15,000 Nussle received from Tom Delay's PAC (ARMPAC)? The Iowa GOP can spin/spin/spin all they want. Nussle cannot escape his web of lies and corruption (man, am i witty today??!!)

4. Focus on six words, folks:
"From biggest surplus to biggest deficit."

Live it, love it, breathe it, repeat it, make it your motto from now through November.

6. Let me add another that I have found effective
Nussle will be worse than Mitch Daniels (short explanation of Daniels), the second most hated governor in the country.

13. Pound that sucker like it owes you money...
Nussle's pretty much done the Dems' jobs for them, if they play their cards right. He can't run from his record.

14. Whatever
Paul Maslin was the pollster for Dean and the Blouin campaign is full of Deaniacs, so that poll is probably crap.

The whole thing about the IDP is stupid too - they had more COH than the Republicans prior to the Lincoln Dinner, and the canvassing portion of the coordinated campaign was really successful in the 2002 off-year (not so much in 2004 for various reasons). It's SOP for parties to bring on staff from the winning campaign in a primary like this one, so if you see some people move in from the Culver or Blouin camp that is expected, not "a shakeup."

Also it is hilarious that they put quotation marks around "coordinated campaign," seeing as how that is the legal term for the thing. Civic Skinny is obviously written by people who don't know anything about politics, not that that is any surprise considering how they also tolerate blatant plagiarism.
