Democrats rip Nussle for ties to DeLay

DES MOINES, IA - Democrats ripped into U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle for his ties to indicted House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, urging the Iowan to return campaign contributions he's gotten from DeLay.

"I call on Congressman Nussle today to do the right thing for three million Iowans," said former Department of Economic Development head Michael Blouin, who is seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. "Give the money back -- all of it -- now."

"As a member of the DeLay leadership team, Congressman Nussle has orchestrated the largest succession of deficits in the history of this country and has in fact doubled the national debt in just four years," said Blouin. "Much of Congressman DeLay and Nussle's money has come from those who have benefited from this team's spending habits.

"This is the same old tired partisan hits," said Nussle campaign manager Nick Ryan. "On a cool September day in Iowa they're more concerned about trying to make partisan political gain than talk about the issues of the day. None of their candidates for governor have offered one substantive policy proposal."

On Blouin's charge of transferring money from his federal account, Ryan labeled that "hypocritical" arguing that part of Blouin's state salary came from big business leaders when he was in office.

Terry Neal notes Tom DeLay's "they're out to get me defense" and says he's heard it all before. "Buried under a sea of political scandal in the late 1980s and early 1990s, congressional Democrats often evoked the same defense. And it didn't work."

"The reason was simple: It is entirely possible both that your enemies are out to get you and that you did exactly what you are being accused of doing. The two concepts are not mutually exclusive."

The New York Times quotes a Republican strategist with close ties to DeLay: "The Democrats will make the case that Republicans are too busy dealing with their own ethical issues to care about the problems facing the country. And guess what? That charge worked pretty well for us in '92 and '94."

5. Dems are piling it on because the GOP piles it UP...

Their lies, their hypocrisy, and their blatant disrespect for the law just keeps on a-comin'. The GOP's the ir own worst enemy. The Dems are just calling everyone's attention to the car wreck.

This is just one more reason that Nussle has to go. He's morally and ethically corrupt and his relationship to Delay (and Terry Nelson) should prove it.

8. I wonder what Nussle will do after he loses to Vander Plaats?

I just hope Nussle blows his war chest before his concession speech to Vander Plaats. I would hate to that money go to other Republicans, like legislative candidates. and hurt Democrats.

As Todd Dorman wrote in the newspaper during Nussle's big dollar announcement tour, Mr. Inevitable can go to Mr. Irrelevant in a couple of news cycles.

Mud is getting harder and harder to hide for Mr. Nussle.

Nussle will have a K-Street job and use his past on the budget committee to lobby his old friends. He'll make millions and contiune to terrorize Democrats everywhere.
