I'm Sooo proud of Grassley -- social security reform
Grassley said that until he hears differently from Bush, he will continue to act on the assumption that the president is pushing for the creation of private accounts.

‘‘Until the president makes that statement, I’m pursuing on the basis that the president continues to support personal accounts,’’ Grassley said.

He will carry water for Bush as far and as long as Bush tells him. Why doesn't he listen to anyone else? If anyone can imitate the Presidents voice please call Chuck and tell him to put a rubber chicken in his head and jump into the reflecting pool on the mall. Bet he will.

1. It's actually good news
This forces Bush to publicly back away from private accounts or watch disasterous legislation get slammed which is a setback. Either he publicly backs away (admits weakness) OR gets a legislative defeat (weakness).

Grassley isn't going to step in to rescue him without cover from the WH.

2. Agreed - this could lead to a true showdown for Bush
and trying to keep his minions in line. The American people will really put the heat on the Senate to leave SS alone and thereby defeat the Bush strategy. I'd expect Bush to come up with some half-assed scheme to get a form of victory. I'd say give him nothing!
BTW Grassley's a fucking idiot. He should have realized that Bush is tap dancing around this based on allowing the representative to go ahead with a half-assed bill yesterday.
