Des Moines Register: Bush 46 Kerry 45, Nader 2, undecided 7 MOE 3.9%

A Des Moines Register poll Bush at 46, Kerry at 45, Nader at 2, and undecided at 7, MOE 3.9
Race in Iowa is a squeaker as Kerry visits Sioux City

July 25, 2004
If the presidential election were held now, it would be another nail-biter in Iowa. A new Des Moines Register poll shows President Bush and Democratic candidate John Kerry are essentially tied.

Bush, a Republican seeking a second term, captures the support of 46 percent of Iowans who are likely to vote in the November election. Kerry, who is preparing to receive his party's nomination this week, is favored by 45 percent.

The Iowa Poll has a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points.

Independent candidate Ralph Nader is the choice of 2 percent of those who say they definitely will vote in the election. That leaves 7 percent who are unsure or would vote for someone else.<snip>

The poll was conducted over a five-day period ending Wednesday. Bush attended a campaign rally in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, but the visit doesn't appear to have had an appreciable impact on his level of support.

Kerry, a U.S. senator from Massachusetts, made a campaign stop in Sioux City on Saturday, after polling had been completed.

1. No way Bush wins in Iowa. Nader voters won't make the same mistake.
I spoke with three former Naderites in Iowa City this weekend. All three realized the mistake they made in '00. One still insisted that there's no real difference between Bush and Kerry--until I brought up the Supreme Court nominations. Then, she said, "oh... I guess you're right."

Mark my words, Iowa goes blue again--this time, with a larger margin.
