What's the deal with the northern I-65/I-465 interchange?
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 05:25 PM by Bill McBlueState
Excuse the road-related question...

I was driving through Indianapolis for the first time on my way from Columbus, OH to Springfield, IL last week. On a map, it looks like the shortest way to get from I-70 east of the city to I-74 west of the city is to go

70W to 65N to 465S to 74W

It was mid-afternoon, so traffic wasn't a concern. But there's no ramp from 65N to 465S! Why not???
There's also no ramp to go the opposite direction, as I discovered on my trip back east.

What's the correct way to do this? Is the beltway the only reasonable option?

1. Perhaps You Could...
stay on I-70 through downtown Indy until reaching the west side of I-465, then take I-465 north to I-74. I have issues with the traffic in and around Indianapolis myself.
:grr:

2. That map you saw is wrong
Yeah, best to just to cruise around on 465. To my knowledge, the 65/465 meetup on the NW side is exit only to 65N.

3. Indiana's Urban Planners were on crack.
Streets that go nowhere ... streets that change names for no reason ... streets that stop, then start again on the other side of town ... interchanges you can only get on or off - not both ... a maze of one-way streets that don't seem to have any coherence ...

ahh, yes ... we are indeed a sane person's nightmare.

4. Don't forget the Circle!
Oh, whee, that's a fun one to navigate with a lot of traffic around.
