Going back to the golden days of the 60's...then again in the late 90's when they had Roe & Garry, Mike Malloy & a then far more interesting Jay Marvin. I could put up with Rush & Dumb Wade & Aroma (my wife's names for them) knowing the station would tip the other way later in the day.
All that went to hell after 9/11...Malloy was gone, Marvin was paired with some woman...toned down even further than he once was (anyone remember the shotguns??) and the station took a sharp turn to the right. Over the last year, the only thing I'd pop on was Roe & Garry...and generally around 3:15 when Ron Magers was on...or some of Jim Cameron & Jim Johnson at 6. My daily listening went from all day to virtually none. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Without getting into names and politics, Garry messed up...and now finds himself in a very poor position. His wife/agent gambled that the station wanted Garry more than than the offer on the table and they walked. I wish him luck...he's a great person and lots of fun when paired up with the right counter-balance (alone Garry's dreadful).
Sadly, there's a major void of good talk radio in this area. Evenings are so bad I look forward to Milt Rosenberg...and listening to WGN is akin to heading for the old people's home. WBEZ, my usual is off into Jazzland at night, and I fish around to an occasional news program from Wisconsin Public Radio, Northern Illinois in DeKalb and the U of I station (when it comes in). Needless to say, I've rediscovered a lot of good music in the last year.
WLS's recent history has been a sad one of poor management and under-performing returns...and looks like that will continue for the forseeable future.
Cheers to my fellow Illinois DU'ers!
