Alternatives to Verizon. in the District

So, the fact that Verizon is giving our phone records to the NSA has us enraged. But is it the only provider of local phone service available within the District? The DC Public Service Commission says there all these companies do: http://www.dcpsc.org/pdf_files/customerchoice/telecommunications/telecom_clecs_prov_service.pdf.

Has anyone used any of them? Know anything about them, particularly their complicity with illegal surveillance?

Fabulous service and much, much cheaper than Verizon.

2. I've had good experiences with Cavalier

Cavtel is pretty good. Their DSL has some technical problems, but their phone service has been good.
