Alcohol sales on Sunday...
Hello fellow GA DU-ers. This post is more a rant than anything else. In today's AJC the linked article discussess the current efforts to legalize in-store (e.g. grocery, convenience and liquor store) sales of alcohol on Sundays.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2009/02/18/georgia_alcohol_sunday.html

There are many things I love about this state, but not having the ability to purchase a sixer at a grocery store on Sundays is not one of them. The fundies (who you see quoted nicely in the article) all talk about preserving the sanctitiy of the "Lord's day." Well, if you don't like it, go the fuck home after church and don't legislate to me when I can buy a beer. I really want to tell them to fuck off, so I guess this is my chance to do so in an open forum. :)

Also, what many folks outside GA do not know is that it is perfectly legal for restaurants and bars to sell alcohol on Sundays (at least in and around Atlanta you see this quite often). Thus, if I choose to be irresponsible, I can DRIVE to the local bar, get plastered, and then go out and be a menance on the roads while I drive home. Where is fucking logic with that approach?

OK, rant off. Back to work....

Cheers!

1. I really hope that Georgia will sell alcohol on Sunday.
I moved up here from South Florida in 1989. And being able to buy alcohol anywhere and at any time is the only thing I miss about Florida.

2. Therein resides one huge irony.
You cannot buy alcohol at a store, drive home and drink. But you can go to a restaurant, drink and drive home.

These fundie nonsense laws are ridiculous from any angle. Georgia also has a budget deficit due to falling tax revenues. One might think that our "conservative establishment" would be able to think a little more creatively about raising money after getting hit with the budgetary Clue Bus.

3. Money vs. morality
Money usually trumps morality, just look at the lottery. GA is one of 3 states that don't allow alcohol sales on Sunday. I'm sure that will change soon and the last 3 will get tired of their fundies not minding their own business and see the added tax revenue.

My response to the "Lord's Day": All 7 days are the "Lord's Day". Let's make it unanimous and buy alcohol on ALL of them.

4. I hear you.
But Republicans have to give just a little more than lip service to their base so they can continue to exploit their labor and their votes for the benefit of the very few at the top of the social ladder. This is one of those issues where the R's get to throw a free bone to the voting base without hurting the pocketbooks of their real base (the rich). I hope this dumb law is eradicated, but I understand why there's little entusiasm for doing so. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to find that the R's are secretly pushing this legislation so they can look like heroes in the eyes of their disaffected and demoralized base when the God-fearing R's in the legislature courageously stand up to the liberal heathens and preserve "the Lord's Day."

5. Follow up - fails once again to get out of committee
unfortunately, not too surprising:

I am, once again, embarrased about my state.
