Places to eat near DIA, Hwys 285 & 50

Can anyone recommend a good place to eat near the Denver airport, or tell me roughly how much it would cost to take a taxi from one of the hotels near the airport into the downtown area, please?

Mexican, seafood, Thai, or a good steakhouse that also serves a good selection for non-meat-eaters? The bluer the better; don't want a chain if we can help it.

Also would appreciate recommendations for the same along Hwy 285 south to Hwy 50, then west toward Gunnison & Montrose if anyone knows of some good places to stop.

TIA :)

1. Well, once you start heading out of town on 285 your eating choices
get kind of slim. There is a place in Salida called Laughing Ladies that I have eaten at several times and it is very good..hopefully it's still there. Bongo Billy's in Buena Vista has great coffee and sandwiches and I usually try to plan my trips to be there around lunch time. There is a mexican restaurant in Buena Vista called Casa del Sol ( or something similar) that is also ok...just remember this is pretty rural country and aside from Laughing Ladies you're not going to find much gourmet!

3. Thanks for that...

Doesn't look like Laughing Ladies will be open on the day we'll be going through, so we'll keep an eye out for the others. The thought of a mexican restaurant is making me hungry right now! :)

5. In Gunnison
Stop at Katie's Cookery (great burgers and a wide variety of vegetarian food), The Blue Iguana (best burrito in colorado), Mario's Pizza & Ristorante (great italian), or Garlic Mikes (also great Italian) for lunch/dinner and the W Cafe (excellend diner food) if you are still around for breakfast. If you are going to be there for the night there are some decent bars too, I used to go to Timbers when I was in college down there.

6. Second on Mario's in Gunnison
Montrose is a little so-so on culinary fare, south 20 miles to Ridgway gets you Drake's Restaurant (faboo) and Doghouse BBQ (also!), another 10 minutes and it's Ouray, where all the food (nearly) is great.

8. Our scientific findings ;)

Right, we wound up getting deliveries to the hotel room in Denver both times (arrival night and the night before departure on the return trip).

I can heartily recommend that anyone else stuck in this situation call either the Blue Bay Asian Cafe or Mattie Sopranos Pizza. Both deliver to the hotel cluster on Tower Road, and both are excellent.

Thanks for the responses re the rest of the trip. We ate at the Quarter Circle in Gunnison on the way west. Wonderful cheeseburger and my better half enjoyed his salad.

In Montrose, we particularly liked the chili rellenos and nachos at El Jimador, but the Costa Alegra restaurant on North 1st just west of Townsend has got to be the best-kept secret in Colorado. It doesn't look like much on the outside, and I'm aware that there was a shooting outside the bar last year. But if you can get beyond that, inside is some of the best Mexican food with a seafood specialty that you'll ever eat. The shrimp in cream sauce is wonderful. Cafe 110 is another good place for lunch.
