Repub DA given slap on wrist for abusing power and cronyism
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 06:38 PM by Democrats_win
"A complaint filed in June alleged that (Caroll)Chambers lied to the collections attorney lawyer about the number of complaints against him and threatened to open a grand jury investigation over the way the collection company handled a case involving Englewood Councilwoman Laurett Barrentine. Barrentine refused to pay a $320 debt because she said she was the victim of identity theft."

"A three-judge panel Tuesday (12/26/06) issued a public reprimand after determining the Arapahoe County district attorney violated a rule in questioning a collections attorney..."

Ok, no one likes collection agencies, especially when they go after victims of identity theft. But why didn't this Republican do something to help ALL victims of ID theft that are facing similar harassment? It seems like the same old story for Republicans, treat people harshly UNLESS it's one of your cronies and then do everything including abusing your power to help them and only them.

The fact that this DA abused her power is a serious matter and once again shows that the law is a joke and treats the powerful with soft gloves while being harsh on everyone else.

There should be a law that helps victims of ID theft deal with collection agencies. After all, the client of the collection agency is partly to blame since they accepted the check. Perhaps an ID theft victim could give the collection agency a case number and the law would require that the collection agency not contact the victim again. Then the collection agency could become a part of the police file so that when the criminal is captured, they can get the money from the real criminal.

Like usual, the Republicans have no answers only cronyism. What's amazing is that the DA is going to fight the reprimand. What a joke! Arapahoe County has already recalled a Republican official for cronyism involving sexually explicit e-mail to an overly paid employee so surely they'll dump this crook too.
