We need to stand behind Kevin Shelley.

There will be a voter-verifiable paper trail in all polling places in 2006, thanks to him. He decertified a lot of machines and got a lot of grief from the BBV people after the primaries. He demanded that all polling places have paper ballots that people could use as an alternative to computerized voting in 2004. Some polling places fudged on this. But he did a good job - especially compared with other states. I'm sure the scandal is a Republican scheme to prevent him from getting us that paper trail in 2006.

I have not always agreed with Shelley but he is a good person and he is working hard for us.

If the Repubs in Congress really wanted to go after corrupt Secretaries of State, they'd start with Kenneth Blackwell. This is being done so they can figure out a way to rig our elections and stonewall any recounts.

Do we contact our legislators? The media? Dem leaders? Or what?

FYI, State Senator Bowen, a Dem, has announced plans to run against Shelley in '06 (if he's still in office). She has introduced some voting reform measures. Go to her site and see if they look good to you. If so, we should encourage Shelly to hang on and not resign until after the '06 election, so Schwarzenegger won't have any opportunity to appoint a rethug.

9. Action plan to save Shelly: Start here.

1. Who's the head of the CA Democratic Party? Someone post a name and e-mail address.

2. E-mails to Shelley's office. Flood him with support messages so he won't resign hastily.

3. Letters to editors--right now--of major newspapers in CA. Start with liberal papers: SF Chronicle, LA Times. Hit the Sacramento Bee, so Shelley will likely see it.

4. Letters to NY Times editor castigating them for failing to: a) point up hypocrisy of Republicans for going after Shelly while ignoring worse legal transgressions done by Blackwell--who holds the same position in Ohio; and b) not pointing out the REAL reasons why the GOP wants to get rid of Shelly--especially how he's kept the easy-to-rig, partisan-owned voting machines out of our state. Yet the GOP criticizes him for doing exactly that--couched in more palatable language, like foot-dragging on implementing HAVA.

5. Contact prominent CA Dems and urge them to speak out and denounced the Republican witch hunt--and point up the hypocrisy of leaving Blackwell alone while roasting Shelly for lesser sins.
Find out who the Speaker of the Assembly and the Senate President Pro Tem are, and get them on board. Try Congresswoman Maxine Waters of LA--always a brave lady, never afraid to speak her mind.
Maybe even Barbara Boxer. The Reps are already hanging her out to dry for speaking up in Congress--why not go the whole nine yards? Keep voting fraud in the spotlight--and the Reps on the hot seat. Exposing them enhances her image in the public eye, once the truth comes out. Tell her 65% of those polled on CNN think Congress SHOULD investigate the election! (Thanks to her speaking out--and a little help from those of you who DUed the poll.)

6. Send letters to national DEMs and urge them to support Shelly publicly. Who might do so? Jesse Jackson, Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones, Bill or Hilary Clinton, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Rev. Al Sharpton, Dennis Kucinich, Al Gore come to mind.
