Newsom staffer touts his boss for 'World Mayor 2005'

The title carries punch: "World Mayor 2005.'' And for the second year in a row, San Francisco's own Gavin Newsom has made the list of finalists in the Web-based, international competition in which constituents nominate their favorite mayor.

Among the nine other U.S. mayors in the running are New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and the chief executive of Tinley Park, Ill., Edward Zabrocki.

The intent behind the World Mayor competition "is to raise the profile of mayors worldwide'' and honor those who have made contributions to the well- being of cities, the group said.

The group's Web site, www.worldmayor.com, has already posted several anonymous comments received about Newsom, some of them citing his stance in favor of same-sex marriage.

"This mayor stands up for what is right for his constituents,'' one posting said. "He is the first mayor in the United States to support same-sex marriage even if it hurts his future political career. He is one of the few real honest politicians in the U.S. now.''
