AZ state constitutioinal ammendment re slection of US Senate nominations?

Talk about rolling back the clock. A state House member in Arizona is
pushing a proposed state constitutional amendment to have each party's
state legislators choose U.S. Senate nominees, according to Tucson's Daily
Star. Voters would get a say only in the November general election,
choosing among the party nominees and independents who still could get on
the ballot. State Rep. Russell Pearce, the Republican who wrote the
measure, said the change would make Arizona's U.S. senators more attuned
to the state's interests and force them to stick closer to the party line.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is one of the chamber's most independent
members -- to the dismay of some in his party. Pearce said he would
really like U.S. senators to be chosen directly by the state Legislature,
as they were before adoption of the 17th Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution in 1913.

When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointment until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct. This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution

Only good news is, if this gets Republican party support in Arizona, McCain could be that much more likely to either go independent or retire. If Kyl comes out against it, too, we could potentially look at picking up more AZ leg seats.
