...JFK did abstain from the vote to censure McCarthy (he was recovering from back surgery at the time, but probably would've abstained in any event), and "Tailgunner Joe" did, at one point, date one of the Kennedy sisters. Any fondness they had for McCarthy the person during the early 1950's matters little in the history they made with their progressive politics in the years that followed.
Regardless of any of that, they were both great leaders - and this nation misses their kind of leadership sorely today. Now more than ever.
