I really think Cheney is screwed
If he tries to go soft, he loses. You can't out charm a charmer.

And if he goes hard, he comes across as being a mean old man.

1. If he goes soft...

Edwards will eviscerate him.

If he goes hard, Bush looks even more stupid.

3. Cheney is no match for a trial lawyer. He who lives by the sword
dies by the sword.

5. Don t count your chickens...
He may come across as calm, reasonable, & competent, & very experienced.

I am really looking forward to this debate...I think it will be more interesting than Kerry vs Bush.

He will never be charming, but he is more intelligent than Bush. And I think he can control his emotions more effectively.

17. Ahhhh yes... the crooked mouth revealing the meanness within....
what can you say about the man who helped build and mold Halliburton after seeing what they have done in Iraq? Something to ponder.

Then there is the little Nigeria thingy... damn that hurts. I wonder if Edwards was involved in this little indisgression... I highly doubt it.
Oh... they hate lawyers... but love them when they suit their purpose as shown here......

7. I honestly don't know what to expect in the debates
between Cheney and Edwards. I'm sure that Cheney will come across boring as usual. Edwards will be personable as usual, but how will they communicate to each other? Will Edwards have his "Southern Hospitality" personality like usual? If so, how will that match up against Mr. methodical, factual and condescending?

Any clues?

9. Cheney = Hatchet man
He's going to absolutely outrageous. He isn't going to charm at all. I think Edwards will have no choice but to say that the VP is engaging in halftruths and absolutelynottruths. It's going to be ugly, but Edwards wins on charm and he should be able to make his stuff stick more.

13. Edwards/Cheney debate
Edwards has a lot of ammunition from the papers this week. He's known for his public speaking, for being able to go for the jugular with a smile on his face. I hope that he does attack but ya gotta worry about him coming across at too slick and you can be sure that the words "trial lawyer" will come out soon and often by Cheney.

In a lot of ways it's Cheney's to lose. Very few people really know or have seen John Edwards. It's up to him to not only show that he and Kerry can lead the country but to show the shortcomings of Cheney.

It might be the best debate of the 4 for sure.

16. welcome to DU, XOKCowboy.
I agree with you--he essentially has the same task Kerry had but against a more formidable opponent. He has to introduce himself to the majority of the country who really has no idea who he is.

24. Welcome..
I think this will be the most interesting debate of the 4, only because I think that both will go for the jugular.

People will be very surprised by Edwards; he's as good as Kerry as a debater.

14. Edwards needs to make his case early: Halliburton & Cheney
Cheney as CEO of Halliburton circumvented the embargo and sold Saddam oil equipment.

Halliburton is one of the biggest profiteers of the Iraq war.

Until last year, Cheney continued to draw a $1,000,000 retirement from Halliburton.

Cheney as former Sec of Defense and V.P. conducted the misinformation channel coming from the Pentagon which led to the Iraq invasion and subsequent mismanagement of the occupation.

Then turn on the smile. At the conclusion of the debate, reiterate the Halliburton connection and Cheney's voting record as a Senator.

19. Edwards is going to destroy Cheney. Big Johnny E. is no Lieberman
and he is pissed at these guys for the sh*t they have been spewing.

I know John Edwards' type well. He is a smiling assassin. I had a professor like that at law school at LSU. All the students loved him, but he could make you look about two feet tall if he wanted to do so. Then he would smile and everyone felt sorry for him having to destroy you like that.

Edwards has the facts, the demeanor and the smarts to turn the scowl into a frown. Cheney bit off more than he can chew this time. I'm glad expectations are low, but they need not be. I can't wait for tomorrow night.

22. Please don't let Edwards lose his cool.
if Cheney eggs him. On the other hand he must attck and not give Cheney any quarter. Cheney is probably the slickest communicator of them all. O.K. I admit I'm nervous. I'll watch from DU then reruns afterward. If Edwards stays cool and on message it will be cool.
