Rove, Bartlett, and the RW machine woke up yesterday (Oct.1st) to realize that:

-their tired old white hat/black hat rhetoric isn't selling any more
-their boy can't even master those talking points after spewing them and untold number of times
-they only have a week to tighten up the strings on the puppet and get him ready for the "town hall meeting" (no matter how soft it is)

It's going to be a tough week especially since they only do the HARD WORK from 8-5.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bush held a big Rose Garden press conference in which he announced that he had "persuaded" the Saudis to cut the price of their crude in half, all because of his close relationship with the House of Saud.

Election in the bag.

Of course, what he forgot to announce is that the price cut is only temporary and that, coincidentally, the price goes back up Nov. 3...

...wil be subjected to lots of skeptical media scrutiny. They saw what happened to Rather, they're not going to risk being strung up. Provenances will be checked thoroughly, internal and external consistencies examined, motives questioned, etc.

Any charges will be hard to make stick, especially for something really explosive.

Which is not to say that they won't try, but it'll be much harder now.

Even if the Saudi said "All Oil For A Week For Free", it's too late now to affect the price of oil before the election. Remember, crude hit $50 a barrel last week...that spells $2.50 or more a gallon on the way and $2 a gallon norms across the country from now on. The prices are already written in...and even though the oil companies love Bunnypants, they're not going to lose billions to prop him up that way.

I almost expect an election-eve "mea culpa" from the Boy...with his base energized and ready to hop in the church buses, he'll do a last minute press conference and admit to "certain mistakes" and please, please, let him do his compassionate conservative thing. He'll really be the uniter, not the divider...a real tear jerker right out of Peggy Noonan's womb.

Also I expect a media barage of misinformation to the likes we haven't seen...confusing polls and attempts to depress voting...especially in blue-leaning red areas.

But here's why I don't think Bush either MIHOP or LIHOP:

In The Winds of War and War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk, one of the characters, a fictitious German general writing after the war, criticizes conspiracy theorists who claim FDR knew about the Pearl Harbor attack and let it happen to guarantee US entry into the war. The character points out that if Roosevelt had known, it would have been far more efficacious to foil the attack rather than sit back and let it happen. The reasoning being, the mere fact of the attack itself would be enough to enrage the Congress into declaring war on Japan, and it would be far better to begin fighting the war in possession of the full Pacific Fleet rather than begin it having to rebuild most of the fleet.

If Bush really had known about 9-11 in advance, I have to think he would have stopped it. I don't like him at all but I don't think he's actually Satanic. And the mere fact that Al Qaeda had attacked us on US soil would have galvanized public opinion behind him.

Besides, the third hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon, where it could have killed Rumsfeld, and the fourth plane, the one the passengers crashed in PA, may have been headed for the White House or Congress. I can't believe Bush would have allowed that to happen if he'd known.
