Whats going on with Senate Battle in LA
for Breaux's seat? Are we going to hang onto it? Is Chris John the Dem candidate?

1. There's been no primary
Congressman David Vitter is the only Republican running. Chris John and John Kennedy are the leading Democrats.

I believe this will be like the 2002 race between Landrieu and Suzanne Haik-Terrell. If nobody gets more than 50 % on November 2, then there will be a December runoff election.

I know Breaux has come out in favor of John. I still think this is a very competitive race for us.

2. Dems optimistic
There is an outside possibility - very outside - that Vitter could win on November 2 with 50% - if he doesn't, the seat looks good for the Dems. The two Democrats, Cong Chris John and State Treasurer John Kennedy are closely vying for the other runoff spot. Chris John is the smooth savvy centrist who Vitter's folks clearly fear. Kennedy is less smooth, is running a little to the left of John, as an economic populist and with the support of Louisiana's only black Congressman, William Jefferson. John is the surest thing to beat Vitter, although Kennedy could certainly beat him and is running more as a Democrat. MOst folks who know anything around here make John a solid favorite over Vitter and Kennedy a slight one. What everyone knows is that some real mud could fly against Vitter - but it won't come out until the runoff.

3. My parents..
are the quinessential swing voters in Kenner. White, Catholic, moderate, voted for both Reagan and Clinton, yadda yadda yadda.. They think that Vitter is an asshole.. and they aren't too vocal about politics, so when they saw him on TV and cursed him during a recent visit home, I was blown-away.

4. LA Open Primary-wierd
There was not primary or selection and so there is one Repug running against two democrats. Unless the Repug gets a majority of the vote on Nov. 2, there will be a run off like in 2002. That would be the real election and the surviving Democrat would stand a chance if the party is united.
