1. It's a smart tactic
Makes him look like a cowardly lobster, but by forcing his supporters to invest in his campaign they become more willing to support him. Whenever you invest in someone or soemthing you are more likely to want it to succeed. The article touches on this.

"There's a basic principle in experimental psychology, that the hand teaches the heart," Professor Green said. "You've now made phone calls for George Bush; that helps solidify your commitment to the campaign. If you weren't enthusiastic and committed already, you might be now."

Still he is writing of the undecided voters in these rallies. Kerry isn't, but believes he might be able to convince people who don't support him already. Plus Kerry looks more like a brave sea lion than a cowardly lobster.

4. I'm waiting to see Bush supporters on street corners
Selling flowers to raise money for the campaign, all dressed in the same polo shirts and khaki slacks.

Maybe they'll write the "Book of Bush" and talk to us about how much more fulfilling their life has become since they "found Bush" and "let Bush guide their decisions".
