Now that Bush's numbers are tanking, will we be treated to endless
discussions about what's wrong with HIS campaign?

Oh, that's right. I forgot for a moment that we don't have a real press anymore.

Do you have a link to this supposed 54%/40%? That would work out to 40/(40+54)-0.5=-7.4% on the Professor's graph below.
