The Free Republic 'TOTAL WAR' Manifesto: A Reflection.
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 06:16 PM by denem
Yesterday I posted a Free Republic OP Ed. as "too good to miss". The morning after, rereading it again, I feel little but consternation.

The calls to 'hang in effigy' the 'traitors, cowards and Socialists', to 'disrupt and heckle', jeer, slam and humiliate, the 'blood sucking parasites' 'exhausting their traitorous staffers', are not parodies of NSDAP propaganda, it's the real thing.

That Lamar Alexander, Kit Bond, Newt Gingrich and Orrin Hatch were amongst those who must be 'hit relentlessly' 'without mercy', should alarm all, Democrats and Republicans alike.

Any history of the NSDAP recounts how they were dismissed as rank amateur clowns; hateful and venomous to be sure, but buffoons none the less.

I believe the responsible leadership of the Grand Old Party should consider reigning in the tea parties and having a word with Rupert Murdoch about Glenn Beck's contract. Free Republic did not begin life Stormfront lite. Notwithstanding the conspicuous absence of antisemitism, the character and direction their 'base' is quite clear. It's past time for cooler and wiser heads to prevail.

1. I do find it alarming that the people they are trying to run out of the party
Bond, Gingrich, Hatch, etc. are the ones that are the solid bedrock of what I consider to be the Republican Party. I don't know what they think they're going to accomplish, but they seem set on a wholesale makeover of the American right. I don't know what to make of it, and I usually have an opinion on everything.
