CA-Gov: Brown looking good. Newsom losing to all Republicans
A new Rasmussen poll of California finds that of the two Democratic candidates for governor, state Attorney General Jerry Brown and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Brown is currently much more electable than Newsom.

The numbers:

• Brown (D) 44%, Whitman (R) 35%
• Brown (D) 45%, Poizner (R) 32%
• Brown (D) 44%, Campbell (R) 34%
• Whitman (R) 41%, Newsom (D) 36%
• Poizner (R) 40%, Newsom (D) 36%
• Campbell (R) 42%, Newsom (D) 36%

Ouch! for Newsom.

1. That probably assumes that gays would vote for Brown.
After his defense of Prop 8 and other recent actions, I doubt they would.

4. It wasn't as simple as that. There was an argument that as AG he had no choice
For the most part as far as Whitman, Campbell, Brown, and Newsom are concerned, at least none of them appear to be extreme right wingers

12. I'd vote for Jerry and might move back to CA to do so actually
I know what Jerry thinks. All you have to do is ask him. No need to read between the lines with him. This is a man who was Gov when I was too young to vote, but I met him a few times back then and he was great. By which I mean I actually liked him and I have yet to meet another politician I actually liked. And I've met a few in the ensuing years.

8. Maybe he'd start hangin out at Lucy's El Adobe again
Would be nice to have him in the neighborhood (even if better Mexican food can be found elsewhere)

13. He has been a great Atty. General IMO
I would vote for him again as Gov. and work for him.

He is honest and dedicated.

6. Looks like Jerry Brown's your guy.
Especially if he's beating Meg Whitman--she's probably gonna be their nominee.

She doesn't quite seem ready for prime time. Poizner is already tearing into her for her thin voting record.

14. Bill Clinton is backing Newsom.
It's too bad because if Brown had his support I believe it would be a win for California.

15. Emperor Zurg is backing former governor Moonbeam
Jerry is too odd even for oddball filled California. Newsom would be better, IMHO.

Remember that Jerry Brown ran interference for the Democratic Establishment that tried to block Bill Clinton's nomination after he defeated all of his other rivals in 1992.

18. "oddball filled California"
Damn. I'm glad I don't live in some podunk state like Kentucky or Indiana. I can only imagine what you'd have to say about me or my neighbors if I did.

I have no problem with Newsom, but I'm pretty sure more Californians would actually find him to be the odd one, if pressed. Even with Clinton backing him I don't see him winning. Brown, otoh, will likely win with or without his support.

But what do I know? I'm just one of the oddballs.

after Brown wins the Democratic primary. Brown will be victorious in November 2010, bank on it.

17. I think the opposite is probably true, based on the source
Rasmussen and the GOP would much rather face Brown than Newsom, so they would probably want things to look just the opposite.

20. Does anyone know much about Poinzer
What's his story?...Is he a far right social loon, is he a fiscal conservative & more moderate on social issues (like Schwartzenegger, whose probably liberal on social issues), etc?
