8. Because the American people elected him....a majority of them
Nobody elected Glen Beck to anything--he's too much of a coward to put his name on a ballot anyway--or his merry band of outside agitators.

10. Actually, I just looked at Free Republic and there hardly seem to be any Freepers left
There used to be threads with hundreds of replies, but when I looked at their front page just now, the biggest number of replies to a thread that I saw was 6. Since they purged all the non-birthers, it's down to just the fringe of the fringe.

15. With few exceptions
There used to be a bunch of them saying "this stuff is making us look like loons."

The loons won.

There was a post in a birther thread a while back to the effect that non birthers were told they could stay as long as they kept out of the birther threads.

FR had a couple of big purges during the primaries too. For example, they booted anyone who expressed support for Giuliani, of all people.

I'm thinking the remaining non birthers must be regular donors.

20. I see what you mean. And, I found the best FR post ever!
Most of the front-page stories have six or fewer replies. The "big" topics get 20 or 30 - there are two or three such topics going now. But the activity level is definitely way down.

Meanwhile, while I was checking, I found a long article by Frank Schaeffer, the guy whose family used to be influential right-wing fundamentalist zealots and who has now seen the light. This is easily the best thing I've ever read on FR. For some reason the entire article seems to be posted. Excerpts and a link:

Ordinary folks from Planet Earth may ask why the Republican Party, right-wing activists and members of the Religious Right seem so unreachable with mere facts let alone decency and decorum. (As the proud father of a US Marine who fought in Afghanistan, I'm particularly outraged that these people would exploit the 9/11 attacks after my son and others were prepared to give their lives in response to our enemies.)

As a former Religious Right leader, who was raised (and home-schooled by my Evangelical-leader parents, Francis and Edith Schaeffer) in the movement, let me explain just why the ordinary rules of decency don't apply to the right these days.

Let me also answer this question: Who are these people?

(snip)

The generation raised on the belief that the US government is illegitimate because it is trying to "impose" non-biblical laws on people has hit the streets. These are the people who grew up indoctrinated into an alternative reality. Today they are out there waving signs of Obama dressed as Hitler. They are buying weapons and ammunition. Some are in the growing and revived militia movement. They are Dick Armey's foot soldiers. People like Armey and Beck can count on the ignorance of their dupes. It's against their religion to read a real newspaper, watch anything but Fox or go to a real school.

Over the last 30 years Evangelical fundamentalists have managed to do what Chairman Mao failed to do with his Red Guards: indoctrinate a whole generation of evangelical people to see their own society as the enemy and act like subversives from within the culture. These people are as anti-American as Al-Qaeda. The "Christian Reconstruction" movement is working for theocracy. Reconstructionism (of which Gary North is one leader) says that the law given for the political and legal ordering of ancient Israel is intended for all people at all times.

The whole article is in this vein. Check it out! The Freeper comments are kind of disappointing, lacking both insight and craziness and ending up merely bland, "what happened to him" type stuff. (One says Schaeffer looks "light in the loafers", I guess that's all they could manage.)

21. Schaeffer is interesting but probably overly paranoid
He seems to be suggesting that the far right loons will, if frustrated at the ballot box, resort to not only isolated acts of domestic terrorism but full-blown armed insurgency. America will become Iraq, with Christian jihadis targeting us heathen Democrats.

I guess the Orthodox Church has been a good influence on them (I know, I'm biased) :)
